converting this file to ADF

Hi,

i found an NTSC version of Battleship in a WHDLoad archive (see attachment).
It's an XFD MASH compressed file, which uncompresses to a 345KB file.
The resulting file is too small for a floppy image, it's not a DMS, ... what is it, and how can i create a floppy from it?

From hex-editing the begin of the file, i am not able to recognize nothing sadly :(

It's not a disk of any kind and no Amiga exe too ..... so difficult to say what actually is it :sad

I was talking of the uncompressed file, of course :)

It's most probably the complete disk image data needed for the WHDLoad patch. Renaming to Disk.1 and copying it into the directory of the patch should work. If that is actually what you want to do. If you want to run it from disk, you need to load the binary to the correct destination ($10000 I think) which you can do with a cruncher like StoneCracker or CrunchMania and you also need to patch all disk accesses as well.

So the file is not a disk, but something like a memory snapshot?!

chip 14 April 2021 16:30

Of course it's not ADF or DMS or any other obscure disks formats (like WRP, COP, ZAP, ZOM, DSQ) and also sure it's not Amiga exe :rolleyes

There's no header identifier which can help to understand the format actually :blased

Looking at the file in a hex editor, there is "XPKF" at the start - so that suggest it is still compressed?

chip 14 April 2021 16:49

Yes, but i checked the uncompressed file with XFDDecrunch :)

It's the disk image data for the game, not a memory snapshot.

I looked at the .asm files a bit. It seems the disk.1 file only contains tracks from the disk which are not empty. Without a special program it will be impossible to recreate the .adf from it.
Then the question is: does somebody have the disk US version of Battleship (no plural) published by Epyx? The WHDLoad i already have.

I have patched the code and created a single-filed version. It will not work on 512k only machines and has not been tested much as it's just a quick hack. Disk image attached, have fun.
