EOTB-2 > Issues installing to HDD >

Hi again peeps.

I was hoping that you could help with getting EOTB-2 (Eye Of The Beholder 2)
installed on my emulated Amiga.

Background:
I have a hankering to play through EOTB-2 (as I never quite completed it
back in the day).

Now I've tried to install the game, and had some previous success, but
I'm now really struggling. So I'm trying to do a complete fresh install from scratch.

My main config is an A-1200 (2 MB chip, and 8 MB fast) with a couple of
directory HDD's

1. I've dowloaded the WHDLoad patches, followed the instructions.
It all seemed to work properly..........It did install the game, however
once it had all completed, when I came to run the actual game, it Guru Meditated.

2. I've tried do use the inbuilt game installer, from disk 1.
I get the error message stating:
I dont have enough free space (I need 3.5 MB free)

So it appears that it's trying to install itself on the same floppy disk
(which obviously wont work).

I have a couple of directory HDD's (that work well, x1 for WB 3.1
and x1 for a standard HDD (mainly used for games / apps / ect, etc).
It appears/is mounted, I can access drawers and files within them).
And this is where I'd like to install EOTB-2, to (The 2nd HDD with games,
etc, on it).

3. I've even attempted to spin up an A-500+, and tried to install WB 2.4
to both a HD File, and a directory HD, but I cannot get WB 2.4 to "see"
either HD's. So I cannot complete a HD install of WB 2.4

I realise that EOTB-2 is an OCS / ECS game, but I can play the game from
floppy on my A-1200 without issue.
I'd just like to install it to HDD, to speed things up (esp the disk access).

Does anyone have any ideas that will help me get EOTB-2 installed on my
directory HDD please ?

TIA for any help and advice.

It's rare for WHDLoad to Guru. Are you sure it's installed correctly? Do other WHDLoad games work?

I've found EOB2 to be pretty robust in terms of working without WHDLoad. The problem with the game's native installer, I suspect, is one common to older install utilities. With large drives, the installer detects *too much* free space, to a point where the value overflows back around to a negative number, making it think there isn't enough space. The solution is to either install to a small fixed-size HDF (you can copy the installed game anywhere afterwards) or fill up your drive to a point where there's only a few hundred MB available. The latter option isn't practical for most emulated systems, but recent versions of UAE have an option to artificially limit the reported free space of directory hard drives. Enable that, and the native installer should work.

I suggest trying to solve the WHDLoad problem, though, since WHDLoad bypasses the copy protection check!

you can try aga version

https://web.archive.org/web/20180521...2%20AGA%20GAME

There is also the possibility to copy files by hand. Put them all in single dir except for fonts for which you have to keep "fonts" dir and run EOBII program.

AMIGASYSTEM 19 August 2021 11:50

@Noob-tech-ninja

You have not specified which emulator you are using !

A1200 you configured has a standard 68020 CPU?

Noob-tech-ninja 19 August 2021 23:29

@Matt_H - Thats an excellent shout, thank you.

@AMIGASYSTEM - I'm using FS-UAE (V 2.8.3) with either an '020 or '030
(I've tried both CPU's)

I made a couple of 64 MB HDF file, and retried (in various configs).

5. A-1200 / 64 MB HDF / Native game installer = Game installs.
However when launching the game, it freezes (with a WB hex error code)
and then Guru's

6. A-500+ / 64 MB HDF / Native game installer = Game installs
Again, when launching the game, it freezes WB and then crashes

7. A-1200 / Dir HD install / WHDLoad installer = Game installs
When launching, I experience an error that is missing the 2.4 Kickstart ROM

8. A-500+ / Dir HD install / (Using the WHDLoad from previous install)
but now using a 2.4 Kickstart ROM
I get the following error: Unable to find tool WHDLoad

Isn't better to try AGA version? It should work ok. Moreover it have very useful AutoMap option (on [TAB]).

Nobby_UK 21 August 2021 20:46

Just tried this:
https://www.whdownload.com/games/E/E..._v1.1_0834.lha

Works fine on an Emulated 1200 040 + 128 Meg

Also tried the AGA version (Emulated 1200 040 + 32 Meg) = Nice
That Auto map is useful :)

@Aladin - Thanks very much for the heads up

Although the link you gave me works, when you get to the page, it prompts
you to chose/click the download links. However when you do this,
there is an error, saying that these files no longer exist.

@Nobby_UK - Brilliant mate, thanks very much.
I've downloaded that version and extracted it.

9. However............I'm now experiencing a new issue trying to get the game to run.

(In the Read me file) it states that it needs -
9.1. An A-1200 rom (and needs to be specifically called kick4068.A1200
(Which I've re-named correctly)

9.2. This rom needs to be placed into Devs:Kickstarts
Which I took to mean - (My Workbench HD installation) /Devs/Kickstarts

Also bear in mind that Im using an HDF file for my WB3.1 installation

9.3. So (within my Linux host machine) I copied an A-1200 rom, renamed it, placed it into my
additional dir HD that contains games and apps, etc, etc.

Then (within the emulator) tried to copy the A-1200 rom file from my 2nd HD
to the Devs/Kickstarts dir. When trying to do this, Workbench freezes
(get the small stopwatch/clock icon instead of the mouse pointer).

9.4. I have also successfully copied some test text files to the same location.

9.5. I then tried to use Dir Opus to copy the file. This also didnt work.
But this time I got a useful error message:
["An error occurred copying "kick4068.A1200"
DOS error code 223 - File is write protected]

So that obviously explains why I cannot copy the file accross easily.

10. Does anyone know how I can copy the file accross to the correct dir
or un-protect my rom file, so that I can then copy the file

You can find it to EAB FTP (retroplay whdload beta)

Noob-tech-ninja 22 August 2021 17:21

@Aladin - Thanks again, that's really helpful

(Apologies for jumping around like a dog on a trampoline but).......

11. I have ended up creating a brand new WB 3.1 installtion.
But this time I've used a directory HD, instead of an HDF

This has allowed me direct acces to the "Amiga files / directory structure" from my Linux host OS.

So that I was able to drop the kick4068.A1200 rom file directly into the Devs/Kickstarts dir.

(I've also downloaded the extra patch, that is required according to the readme file).

12. When I installed EOTB-2 most recently, it was to my 2nd HDD
(lets call it games for simplicity)

I've just tried to run EOTB-2 again, and I am met with the following error message:
"Unable to open your tool WHDLoad"

13. Does it matter that I installed the game to a different HD ?

Or is WB and EOTB-2 expecting some (installer ?) files to be located on my "New WB installtion" HD ?

Aladin 22 August 2021 18:20

copy only the file "whdload" in your c:

whdload is in the archive:
http://whdload.de/
for example: (in directory c: on the archive)
http://whdload.de/whdload/WHDLoad_18.6_usr.lzx
http://whdload.de/whdload/whd187.lha

malko 22 August 2021 21:17

I just have installed "EOB II". Config A1200 2MB+8MB & WB+ROM 3.1 & PFS3aio HDF.
The provided Install program effectively complains about missing 3.5MB space even if there is enough free space left (I have a small partition).
It's funny as EOB 1 install works.
So I have manually copied all EOB II files onto a folder (reverse order : floppy 4, 3, 2 & 1) and launched the game.
The game play nicely without the need of any assign so far.

Noob-tech-ninja 22 August 2021 21:34

@ Aladin - Thannks, I did that, and had the same result.

14. OK, I have done the following -

14.1. I have spun up a brand new WB 3.1 installation (on a dir HD)

14.2. I have downloaded and installed
LHA.run
Installer 43.3
WHDLoad_usr.lha (2020-10-25)

14.3. Added the (kick40068.A1200 [notice the new proper correct name] ) rom file
to Devs/Kickstarts

14.4. Unpacked and installed the, Eye of the Beholder 2 game (WHDLoad version)
this time to a games dir on my workbench install.

14.5. Now when I try to run the game, I get the following error message:
Dos error #223
(file is write protected)
on reading "devs:kickstarts/kick40068.A1200".

At this point, I think it may be easier to use my actual physical A-1200
(with a faulty floppy disk drive) to try and play the game...........
:banghead :crazy

Aladin 22 August 2021 21:51

have you installed required:
http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/skick346
(with kickstart rom)

if not working after, your rom kickstart is not clean, try another

Noob-tech-ninja 22 August 2021 23:27

@Aladin

15. No I hadn't installed skick.....Doh !
(Annoyingly - I had done that on a previous install attempt)

16. I am still experiencing the same error message as before:
DOS error #223
(file is write protected)
on reading "devs:kickstarts/kick40068.A1200".

17. What do you mean by a "clean kickstart" ?
I am using a brand new set of ROMs that I purchased as part of Amiga Forever 9 (2021).

I would have thought, that they weren't corrupted.

Thanks for all the help so far though !

Aladin 22 August 2021 23:44

This is not an EOB problem, it is a problem with your workbench installation. All whdload games not working with your installation.

have you tried to unprotect your kickstarts files?

i don't know amiga forever, but don't need a key with these amiga forever roms?

try to put another rom ...

Noob-tech-ninja 23 August 2021 00:27

18. I tried the following -

18.1. The 3.0 KS rom (as the main rom for FS-UAE = Same issue

18.2. The 3.0 KS rom (but renamed, in the correct format stated by the readme file.
And put into the Devs/Kicksart dir = Again the same error message.

19. I agree with you, this seems to be more of an WB/OS issue rather than a game issue.

I just need to figure out how to "un-protect" the kickstart files.

20. I do have the correct rom key (provided with all the roms from Amiga Forever)
and put that in the same Kickstart dir (in-case it was needed).

malko 23 August 2021 00:55

Did you try this : https://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p...4&postcount=36 ? ;)

Ok, I don't know what's in version from link before, so I'm recommending You my version. It have two different versions - standard and WHDLoad, try both.
Here is link, also first part is available. Download these versions, because they are full, standard version is not removed (which should be at least scolded by Cfou! :agree).
