Working Rocket Ranger

Does anyone have a working copy of Rocket Ranger in ADF? Every copy I have found dosent work properly.

Hewitson 09 January 2019 09:24

Surely the Quartex crack works properly?

webmany 10 January 2019 03:29

The sites I have found have multiple versions of it. The farthest I have gone is the game loads, but then freezes just after the arrows showing the germans attacking other countries.

Personally I just use the .IPFs in emulation... but you should use the .ADF set that Gamebase Amiga uses i.e:

... Rocket Ranger (1988)(Cinemaware)(Disk 1 of 2)[a].zip
... Rocket Ranger (1988)(Cinemaware)(Disk 2 of 2)[a2].zip

Also, here's a nice "Secret Decoder Wheel" document that's absolutely necessary ;)

Thanks everyone. I will give it a try and let you know the outcome.

Both games freeze at the workbench screen. This is on a A1000 with 512K ram, so thinking it might not have enough memory. Thanks for the help.

You didn't mention this part originally...

Just tested in WinUAE with an A1000 Quickstart and it's not working.

...the game probably isn't compatible with this Amiga model / Kickstart.

Dunny 11 January 2019 18:24

I used to play it on my A1000 (expanded to 512Kb) back in the day - worked fine for me. Maybe a kickstart thing? I used 1.2 for many years before I was finally forced to upgrade to 1.3 when my kickstart disk finally died.

I have to say, the protection on that game was genius, even if it was easy to copy out into a table format :)

Just tested in WinUAE using an "A1000 / KS 1.2 / 512 Chip RAM" configuration and this does indeed work.

It doesn't with KS 1.1 though; so I guess the question for webmany is what KS does he have in his Amiga?

jotd 11 January 2019 20:43

BTW what does "crack" mean in this case? The protection is a list of values / ranges for the rockets. In the whdload install, all I did was to show the list on keypress. What did the other cracks do?

According to the sticker on the box, you have enough memory. As also mentionned, do you have the EXTERNAL DRIVE (is is really required to play this game ?)

No - I played from the original disks (same boxed version as that image) on a single-drive A1000 without any issues at all.

webmany 12 January 2019 04:29

Its an amiga 1000 with 512K ram and kickstart 1.3, but I can try 1.2. I have a single gotek running the latest flashfloppy.

webmany 12 January 2019 05:41

Tried kickstart 1.2 with the disks from here and any others I can find. Thinking something must be messed up on the amiga.

That's really strange.

In WinUAE the game works perfectly with an "A1000 / KS 1.2 / 512 Chip RAM" or an "A1000 / KS 1.3 / 512 Chip RAM" configuration.

When I originally tested I used KS 1.1, and this fails...

webmany 14 January 2019 02:55

I think I have it figured, thanks to the box. I was trying to use a single floppy drive. It even messes up in emulation with one drive. I am tracking down another drive and will give it a try.

Hewitson 14 January 2019 03:49

There's no way known this game is only compatible with multi-drive systems.

Edit: Well, after looking at the box, I guess you're right. I've never heard of this before.

TjLaZer 14 January 2019 04:04

Here try this one:

Retroplay 14 January 2019 04:05

Yep, I clearly remember the day back in '92 I bought an external drive for my A500 (AmiTech "no-click" drive).

That was the day I finally could play this game.
