Shinobi Arcade Conversion
Hi everyone.
Many years ago (1999 i think), i was dreaming of an arcade conversion of shinobi for amiga, but due to laziness i didn't bother about it. Is it possible? I mean the amiga conversion was a huge disaster and i rather play the c64 version which are superior in my opinion. Now then rygar is done, it might not be impossible to make it happen??? Ryggar btw, is a really nice game. |
Hmm, just looked at the Amiga version of Shinobi and yeah, it does look pretty bad. Gameplay looks ok-ish (but slow), and the gfx and are terrible along with the jerky scrolling.
It should have been a much better port at least graphically, the arcade game had nice gfx, but the Amiga could get much closer than this conversion – the enemy sprites are woeful. |
Mcgeezer, author of rygar, made a poll to see which game to port next

Hej @Legionary
Shinobi on Amiga was a huge disappointment especially for those of us who absolutely loved the arcade version (and of course I have the orignal Arcade PCB to play on ;-) So a remake (re-port?) would be some justification for the Amiga which surely can do a lot better than what we got. But as Gordon mentioned, there's a poll by Mcgeezer. Instead of just voting, maybe joining forces and co-develop it would be a good idea? ;-) Right now Shinobi is at #1 in that poll. |
well, maybe ask tryphon the source code of his remake for megadrive, and adapt it on Amiga ?
|
I've said it countless time previously; Shinobi on Amiga... for me the biggest disappointment ever!!! :agree
What a major abomination; it doesn't get any worse :banghead :banghead :banghead For all you guys that love Shinobi on the Arcade; you need to check this out when released on the 10th of April: Shadow Gangs Absolutely friggin' awesome; Jack has done an incredible job here :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown |

Also, finally we can fight evil Freddy Mercury Shinobi-style :D /eX |
I would love to see a more arcade faithful version on the Amiga. I know someone has recently done it on the Megadrive and its pretty much arcade perfect so I'm sure the Amiga is a platform where a much better version can be done. :great

I will assume you have misread what he said... read it back

Shinobi II, shadow dancer conversion is pretty good.
The usual amiga limitations, US gold, Atari, more than 8 sprites on screen etc... |

So yea, it is suitable for these types of games for sure.. (Rumor has it the actual successor to the Master System was abandoned when SEGA found out about Nintendo developing the Super Nintendo, so they realized they had to up their game and the System 16 arcade hardware was already there, it was successful, developers knew how to develop for the 68000 etc..) I think the main motivation to do a better Amiga port is to prove it could have been so much better if only the devs would have done a better job. A lot of people were frustrated at the lazy port we got, so its a matter of vindication ;-) Also, the guy making the Megadrive version is also trying to prove they could have got an arcade perfect port back in the day, but how strange is it that they didn't even get a release at all?.. |
I think shinobi on Md wouldn't have been as good if it was developped by sega in 90's due to the constraints of that time, better than the amiga version for sure, but far from the homebrew version too .

Hi all .
Some news of my shinobi conversion for the nec supergrafx . The intro is almost done, and i started the bonus level, the hand animations and move are done . https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...bi_AC-0007.png A first video of the level one to test the scrolling . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi19qEHwq00 All are real footages from emulator of course . I moved the project from hucard to CDROM+Arcade Card,so some parts must be redone, and some news routines must be writen to take in account the arcade card device . Like i said in another tread, all the gfx are converted and the result is close to arcade perfect, at least for the colors number on screen . |
So, i know someone is trying to make this in scorpion but, in case he fails, you have any plan to port the SGX version on Amiga? (OCS/ECS to make things more interesting)
|
Unfortunately no, but like many of yours, it would be great to finally have a good OCS version.
|
Why now?! I mean 30+yrs ago this would be a diamond question,...getting great conversions on the Amiga following all the shite ones we got and believe me I know with all the games I've reviewed on the Shit Game Time series, but now we have MAME to play all those classics so what's the point converting them to Amiga now?!
Oh by the way, Shinobi was awful on the Amiga, dull flat boring colours with a character who looks to have a hump as big as hunchback and as for that awful music YUK, such a poor attempt from quite a good publisher, this was one of their bad days and yes it was a SGT review many moons ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzo1e4aHGLo |
Wow. What an utterly negative comment.
(And finishing it by putting a link to your personnal YT channel... Not very elegant ). Anyway, nice work Touko... I' be happy to see an Amiga version if this could happen, like other great conversion we had recently like Tinyus, Metal Gear or Rygar. And maybe some more to come like Rastan or Final Fight. I much prefer this kind of commitment to the Amiga community than YT channel shitting on the Amiga library. |
I have most of the graphics from Shinobi arcade :)
