How close is the end?
How long will it be before Amiga hardware is no longer available, 2000 3000 4000 are now very hard to get especially accessories
|
In a few years time a large number of Amiga owners will have to sell theirs to make room in their house for their second child.
The time of cheap available Amiga's on eBay will come again :) |
Hi Vars,
I know you have seen the A2000 on eBayAU at the moment, but here is another one worth checking out: http://www.amiga.org/modules/newbb/v...48097&forum=21 PZ. |
I guess there will always be Amigas to buy @ a price...
...for me that price has already passed the point where I can justify further purchases. So I'll be buying no more. :( |
You just have to know where to look Charlie. The odd bargain comes round now and again.

...I have to admit my 'retro habit' is often fed by some very kind donors here @ the EAB. (you know who you are - I remain eternally grateful) BTW: I wholly agree with 'alexh's law' :) |
Last year I was given my A1200, for FREE.
We can still be luckey sometimes :-) When I talk about my hobby I sometimes have some "old crap" that someone have in their closet, it may be old crap for them, but for me/us it can really be something good :-) But, I also really hope we have more new "Amiga-ish" hardware in the future. Personaly I like the ideas of Natami, MiniMig & SAM440. The sad thing is, some of the things we have is getting old and flacky. |

Hi taunusanden, I don't see what there is not to like about Natami, MiniMig and SAM440. Anything which is a step forward in the Amiga world - especially in relation to hardware - is very welcome indeed! :) |

So there is nothing to like yet ;)

SAM440 in my opinion, is pretty awful. I mean who in their right mind would pay £450 for this somewhat useless hardware, plus the cost of OS4.1
I just do not understand why anyone would want to dedicate a very expensive machine to OS4.1. What is the point of it? Sure competition is always good whether it be washing powder or operating systems but OS4.1 seems so far behind it makes it useless. Is there really any good reason to be running OS4.1? Sam = £450 OS4.1 = £100 Plus everything else you need to buy for the system. Honestly it just seems ridiculous that people even consider wasting their money on these. For £550 could get a half decent x86 machine, a minimig from Acube and a nice little A1200. Utter crap, but then, that is only my opinion. :) |

Once the Chinese start cloning & selling it for a decent price, then I might buy one :D Of course, I'm all for supporting new developments, but I think the pricing of the SAM is driven purely by the special/rare factor only, not development costs! PZ. |
OS4 on x86..?

Going back to the original question, I think the 3000 series seems to be the most difficult to get hold of these days. The 4000 comes up every now and then and are relatively cheap. 2000's - loads of them about on ebay.de :) and if you don't need all the Zorro slots et al just buy a 500 as that's what they're based on. |
I would never replace Windows with OS4.1. It is just so far behind. The description mentions 'modern web browsers' and 'video players'. It is as if this was written in the late 90s.
Give me VLC player and Firefox/Chrome/Opera over the Amiga equivilent any day. Obviously if Amiga OS had been competing all these years with Apple/Microsoft then it would be a different story and there would probably be a huge range of powerful freeware apps. I can see the 'fun' factor behind it but the idea of it still seems utterly pointless to me. |

But, I must agree, it is a lot of money. I HOPE the price for SAM comes a bit down, because I can't afford it right now. IF I had the money, I would have bought it! |
Hi. On a somewhat related note, how long do you think the current hardware will last before it breaks down? I just lost my 1994 1200 and had to replace it. I'm onto my third one now.
The Minimig is cool. If it would support 8 meg fast (or even better 8 meg chip :) and hard files I'd get one in a flash. Frank |
