Source for A4000D CPU card plastic standoffs

I'm looking for a reliable, regular source of the plastic stand-off's which come with most A4000 CPU cards.

I've got an Apollo A4040 and a few A3640's which came without them. I *think* you need 4 per card?

I think they are approximately 24.5mm tip-to-tip. All pictures of measurements of these things that I've found on the net are all of the wrong dimensions (they are tip-to-tip including the plug instead of just the central spacer bit). But here are a few that I found in case you've no idea what I'm talking about.

I'm looking for somewhere like RS, Farnel, Maplin or some where like that where we can all get them from on a regular basis.

An accurate, universally accepted, name for these items would be as good. It would make it easy enough for me to google for them. I've tried "spacers", "standoffs", "plugs", "screws", "plastic", "Nylon" etc. non of which yield usable search results.

Please bear in mind that I have no idea what I am looking at (or whether you need to order 5 million).

Edit: please don't stab me if the above links are "shit".

Hi Alexh, my Apollo 4040 only has two. There are only two places on the Mobo and Apollo that I can see for these stand offs to go.

One is next to the CPU socket (IDE end) and the other is on the oposite corner of the processor card.

Steve.

@ KillerGorrilla
Better stuff than I was able to find.

So, I need to work out the diameter of the motherboard holes. Perhaps the length of the actual stand off bit (clips not included) and I'll take a stab and order some.

@Fitzsteve
I'm not sure that is the case for all cards. Looking at pictures of the A4000 motherboard there are four holes below where the CPU card is. In this picture two have plastic pegs in them (near C187 and U145) and two (near U152 & J850) are empty.

I can see looking at the Apollo A4040 it does only use two. The ones near C187 & J850

@Alexh: wrongly measured!

You need the space between the motherboard and the accelerator, tip-to-tip can vary and is not an indicator of the real space between planes.

I can confirm that my CR revD board with A3640 had four of them attached.

multivac 04 August 2010 09:04

The Phase5/DCE accelerator cards use four stand-offs. Some of the parts shown on the links above are in packs of 1000 and I only need 16. Could we not organise a joint order?

alexh 04 August 2010 09:27

@rkauer
I *KNOW* those measurements are wrong. You were in such a rush to trying to point out my *imaginary* error you didn't read the post properly! I didn't take the pictures. They were trawled from the internet. Look what I wrote:

I've not identified which ones to buy. There seem to be enough sources to buy them in smaller numbers once we determine which ones we need. If not then I'll buy a load and give them away for the cost of postage. Perhaps donate them to AmigaKit.

Wouldn't a nylon PCB standoff and a screw do a decent enough job?

Dunno about you but I'm not taking my A4000 motherboard out if I don't have to.

Risk of damaging the board through scratching & electrostatic discharge plus my A4000D case draws enough blood each time it is opened as it is :)

Hewitson 04 August 2010 09:38

Best big-box I have is the A2000 to be honest. Not a bad case to work on those.

Would love to swap my 1260 for a 4000D though.

Cannot find what you are looking for? Do it by yourself!

Such plastic standoffs can also be made; of course it will cost you a lot....

alexh 05 August 2010 15:41

Nice.

As soon as I can get the right measurements I'm sure I'll be able to find a source of existing standoffs.

They are not quite as bespoke as heatsink + clips.

stachu100 05 August 2010 15:49

I'm trying to find proper clips - really difficult...
Of course there are some solutions (buying heatsink+clip), but haven't found clips alone.

Good luck with your search!

Alx 18 August 2010 22:20

I just measured one of the standoffs from my A4000 and the measurement is approx 17.5mm. I can get a more accurate measurement at the end of the month if I can find my vernier calipers.

alexh 18 August 2010 22:21

Thanks. Take a photo showing which dimension you measured.

Bummer, 17.5mm does not appear in any of the catalogues I've found so far.

Alx 18 August 2010 22:58

I measured the middle part that sits between the motherboard and CPU board, as per the picture.

Hope this helps.

P.S. The perspective of the photo makes the measurement look a little off.

alexh 19 August 2010 00:10

That's the right measurement. Thanks.

papa_november 19 August 2010 01:44

I use metal ones in mine. They're orders of magnitude better, and put less stress on the card.

rkauer 19 August 2010 03:26

With a caliper rule the measure will be a bit more exact, but it's good to know it is 17mm!:great
