Updating Graphic Adventure Creator aka Grac

From Amigawave and Goblins group we are updating the public source of Grac editor and player since few months. Actually we are using it and testing with our RetroWars game and our next release. When we finish some updates of the source we publish it for all amiga community with source.

We are working in two ways ; first fix some bugs in the source, second add new features.

Until now we update some rutines for make translations to other languages easy, add a command to load and unload .mod files form memory at any time of the game, auto save feature, and some other fix of source.

Our idea is release an updated Grac 3 for help amiga users to make his own graphic adventures focused to work with all Amiga, this means make hard work to do it work with the standard of Amiga 500. Add AGA feature is not our goal for now. When we finish it , it's possible that we try recreate a similar tool with most modern tools like Amiblitz or similar.

Awesome man; keep up the good work!!! :bowdown

Great mate! Keep doing so well!

I forget say that the maker app and tools will be to do the work in the Amiga computer, not using high level tools for PC or Mac. We want that you work hard and enjoy with your Amiga´s and if you can use a real Amiga and no emulated, you'll enjoy more creating your own game.
Actually we dev our games with an Amiga 600 and MorphOS machine, and use a plain A500 with 512Kb chip and 512Kb Slow/fast with Gotek to test games.

I like Epsilon 9, which is probably the last game made in GRAC by E.W. Clay. It is almost perfect point n click adventure, but it lacks sound and music. I do not know if original GRAC doesnt allow it, but if you manage to add sound capabilites to GRAC games, it would be wonderful.

Be ready, Retrowars have music in-game and support sound effects at the same time, but we want update current player routine or player, actually is not possible use "fine tune" option in protracker modules.

E.W. clay is the original author of Grac code.

Now thinking that an beguiner guide or the manual in different languages will be a good idea.

I'm suppose that he lack of music in epsilon9 was to try to work with only 512Kb of ram.

Why not?
Have you already something existing?

malko 21 February 2018 20:09

If an English manual or beginners guide already exists, I could help translating it in French.
Just let me know.

Ozzyboshi 26 February 2018 22:24

Actually I am writing a book about GRAC2, it's a beginner guide written in italian, it would be awesome to add the grac3 improvements and maybe translating it in other languages

We are near to release.
Is not a secret that Goblins and AmigaWave join forces to update GR.A.C ( Graphic Adventure Creator original from E.W. Clay ) for Commodore Amiga . After lot of time testing and lot of work hunting and fixing bugs we add some new features. Now the project is in internal beta, we hope that in a short time we can share with Amiga community , first as enhanced version 2.5 and later with more improvements as version 3.0.
Birra and Tom from Goblins are making a very good work with the sources.

Stay tune ! and be patient .

Predseda 24 March 2019 22:28

Am I correct that the original GRAC (in which Epsilon 9, Starbase 13 etc. were created) doesn' t support ingame music / sounds? Those games are silent.

EDIT: oh, I aleady asked that... sorry.

Grac 2.0 support only one mod file per game and most games use this unique mod for title screen or intro, and can't add more musics for the game. This enhanced version support up to 100 mod files per game and you can load an unload by script for control and preserve free chip ram. You can do the same thing with save states, and have an autosave state mode.
This 2.5 version can import old 2.0 projects adventures and save in the new format for use it with the bug fixes and enhancements without recreate the game from scratch.

Here an screenshot of the small adventure that we are using for testing the updated GRAC 2.5.
We are using pixel arts by Dominik Haslinger, Jens Doblies, Sebastien Ronsse and Jennifer McMurray.

retroredrum 25 March 2019 23:05

very good news ! I was about to abandon my amiga project (and switch to AGS on PC) because of the many bugs that were present in versio 2.0

Can't wait for the final release of 2.5 !

mjnurney 25 April 2019 04:25

Awesome work , how is it progressing?

A guide would be helpful.

Can iff be used as background images?
