KGB - WHDLoad Files Install & German V2

1 Attachment(s)
Hello there, lovley EAB Reader :)

Before i start .... ;

I almost can hear you scream " TORTI, you stupid Son of a Smurf, THERE IS A KGB WHDLOAD installer ! " :scream

and YES, thats true; true like Smurfette is the only female Smurf in town.

Butt, aehm, but i found something really strange about it.

First; thank you so much Master JOTD for all the hard work. :bowdown
We Smurfs do really appreciate it :spin .

Here are 2 things that could be sweeter tho ; just a suggestion of course. :cool

1) The install makes hole Disk Imagefiles from the Disks and this ends up in a way bigger File/Memory footprint.

4,5 MB (Images) VS 3,6 MB (Files)

2) This is the Main one here. (on some real hardware)

There are 2 German versions of KGB and one of them has a very strange "faster music when pointing over objects" bug; if installed with WHDLoad.

Only on my real hardware, not in WinUAE. Very odd.

Normally i would use the Native install of the Game but this one dosent like 3.1 and Fast-Ram that much, so i use WHDLoad.

Seems that one of the German versions produces this strange Music bug and the other dosent.
File Install would also be really sweet tho for Low-Mem Setups.

Anyhow, thats all.

Have a great Smurfy day and thank you so very much :bowdown

Torti :spin

PS: There is also a Report about this "Music getting faster when mouse is moved over objects problem" here.

So it also happend to the English Version/s ?
How many different versions are there of KGB ? :crazy

can you get me a kryo dump of the missing version of KGB german ?

will do IPF out of the disks dumps :)

Torti-the-Smurf 01 November 2021 18:45

I dont have the Floppys anymore. It has been Years. I did use IPF Files myself. (dont know from which version, besides german).

As in the linked Post above. This also effect some english versions. Very strange.

For example.:
If i use any preinstalled german KGB WHDLoad Pack i get this strange music speedup bug.
Same with the IPF Files i have, but if i use the only cracked german version there is, the bug is no longer there. The Cracked german version is pretty sure from the first release.

Disk1 from the german cracked early version is enough, for getting rid of this bug.

I dont know how many versions the KGB installer/slave supports or was tested with. There is not much info about that in the readme and like i said, it only happends on real Hardware. (Tested with A600 Furia 3.1 Kick 3.9 WB)

If you want WHDLoad you have harddisk in your computer, so with KGB is not necessary. From EAB you can take the adf file and install easy on HDD.

With WHD you need at least 6 MB of memory (2 Chip RAM + 4MB for preload).
From HDD it is enough 1,5 MB of memory as reported by "manual addendum" (1 chip ram + 512k slow fast or 512k chip ram + 1 MB slow fast).

Whowever, harddisk installation is always better than WHDLoad.

Torti-the-Smurf 01 November 2021 23:03

Sure ; only problem, KGB dosent like Kick 3.1 very much and (or) Cpu Cache and maybe real Fast-Mem.
Sometimes it works until the Virgin Logo when installed via the ondisk installer.
Sometimes it stays on a black screen when double clicked and very rarley it works for some reason.
I tried a few tools like Runshit" "RunOldies" and "Killaga", but its the same random result.

There is also the possibility of MapRom, for example Kickstart 2.05.
Maybe i get it to work somehow, without the need for WHDLoad or a MapRom solution.

I do more testing.
Cheers :spin

erm no, sorry can't let you say that.

You're forgetting the fixes that whdload slave apply to each game. Install KGB on a 68040 you'll have graphical issues because game isn't programmed properly for anything than a 68000 on a kick 1.3...

A lot of games have similar issues. It's been documented over and over for the last 25 years.

If you have a 68000 + not a lot of ram, okay use direct HD installers (make sure you have a cracked copy or the protection codes handy BTW). Otherwise, whdload often improves/fixes things (plus you can quit anytime)

Only on 68000 machines like an A600 with 2mb of chip + hard drive.

Memory is not a problem anymore nowadays. and whdload as JOTD said do many things for compatibility and fixes.

Torti-the-Smurf 02 November 2021 10:47

Exactly :agree

WHDLoad is probably the biggest gift to the Amiga community ever.

Sure, i mostly prefer a native install when possible, but just thinking about not having WHDLoad and JST give me shivers, and not in a good way. :crying

Thank the Amiga God´s for there biggest Gift the Amiga Community ever got :bowdown

I did hours of testing with the native installed KGB Game :crazy
If the game works is still random :bash

What the...:banghead

I did made myself a MapRom Skript that reboots if i double klick the KGB icon.
It reboots, loads the game and after exiting the game, another automatic boot and back to my Workbench :scream

The game loads super fast and has no more of those long "busy clocks" waiting sequences :spin

Soul Crystal and KGB are the only games i use this methode :p

Seiya 03 November 2021 11:52

try "noAGA".

Torti-the-Smurf 03 November 2021 13:13

Thanks, it was worth a try but nope, same result.
I stick to the MapRom Solution ;)

Seiya 03 November 2021 20:38

well if you have so much problems, in this case, better use WHDLoad.

Torti-the-Smurf 03 November 2021 23:46

Not really a problem, like i explained above. :)

The thing with the WHDLoad version is, that it is VERY slow ; resulting in alot of waiting. That "busy clock", you know ;)

This game has alot of trial and error.

Its Timed based; has alot of things that can get you stuck in the game ; so best to save every Step :)
Experimenting; asking different questions, Changing Locations and so on, is all part of this game.

So things should go fast. No one likes to wait and watch a busy clock :shocked

With the native install, its almost instant. No more "busy clocks". How it should be. :spin

I think there should be a WHDLoad FILE version of KGB, so it dosent have to serch for its files in those huge disk images.

That was a main point of this Thread.

A Whdload FILE install for KGB.
But i dont know if Master JOTD has any time for this.
He is super busy i guess and the MapRom solution works just fine for me :)

Maybe he will do it someday, you never know :xmas
Greetings , Torti :spin
