Enhanced Chip Set (ECS) Games
Hi there!
Here is a question for which I can not easily find an answer : :confused Are there amiga games that take advantage of the ECS ? :confused If you know titles of non AGA games requiring ECS, or, which are better using the ECS than using the OCS... |
Maybe these ? :

He’s asking if there are any games that utilise the ECS chipset over the OCS like the Atari STE does over the ST. Personally i dont know, i know some are listed as ECS on HOL (but most are made to ECS compatible rather than use any of the features), but there is mistakes like Alcocoptor listed as ECS only when its clearly stated as OCS on the title screen! |
As far as I'm aware "Enhanced" meant a "fatter" Angus chip, which meant it could handle more on-board "Chip" memory, up to 2MB.

But also, the graphics chip had an extra screenmode for multisync monitors and some other tiny enhancemants, none of which were ever used by games to my knowledge. So these features of ECS are often overlooked. There were found some few demos, however, that used these ECS graphics features probably by mistake, which therefore don't work in OCS machines. |
I recall running a few games on a 31kHz screen by promoting them with NewMode, not sure but I think EoB and Dune II worked like that. That would not be possible with OCS, but it was not something the games were designed for.

Bigger blits were possible on ECS. Separate width and height values. Borderblank was another edition. I don’t think anything would have been used in games. Perhaps extra chip memory?

Did Uridium 2 use ECS graphics in any way or was it just using extra chipram? |
ECS was 1MB Chip and Super Denise along with Kickstart 2.x. Not familiar of any Disk based game that required 1MB Chip RAM, but there are a lot that required 1MB total RAM. (WHDLoad is another story) Not aware of any game that needs a Super Denise.

Going from games that I added into my collection: Code:

this list is totally erroneous there is no way that future wars, or lost vikings or ween the prophecy and almost all games you posted requires 1mb chip |
I can confirm that turbotrax and dracula, both requires 1mb chip ram
|
There are more if you bothered to actually try them i.e. the first on the list "AmigaParachute" :agree
Anyway, as I said; and this is the important part of my above post plus the answer to the original question: Quote:

Worms requires at least 1mb chip ram as well.
|
But, but; that can't possibly be true... Mrz with all his infinite knowledge says my list is "totally erroneous" :rolleyes
|
you are kids :laughing thanks for the funny reading Damien & Mrz :great

Ke??? Who's being a kid?
Mrz thinks that my list is bogus... but has no real grounds to say so. Straight after making him comment; one minute later he says: Quote:
As I already said; if he even bothered to try these games from my list with "512KB Chip & 512KB Slow RAM" he would see that they would either stop loading or crash :agree I'm not about to retest all again just to prove him wrong; that is totally childish. ...but I've gone through the first 5 via WinUAE for the hell of it; and they do not work with "512KB Chip & 512KB Slow RAM": Code:
C:\WinUAE\Configurations\AmigaParachute.uae Anyway, again I'll quote the important part of my above post plus the answer to the original question: Quote:

Doesnt matter. Original question is ECS, not the ammount of RAM. In my understanding it is graphics (visual) effects, that OCS can not handle, no matter how much RAM it (theoretically, if equipped with proper Agnus) use. And I personally really do not think there is any single game, that really gathers from Super Denise.
