Barbarian - The Ultimate Warrior, still awesome!

Let's face it, this was one of the best Amiga beat'em-up slashers of It's time especially in 2 player co-op mode, and who can forget those head rolling decapitations :spin which caused an outcry especially in Germany.

I decided to record a full playthrough of it without any cheats with my thoughts, I hope some of you enjoy it :great

Let's Longplay: Barbarian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZU3rWgsEIk

Missing music. C64 version is superior.

Yes, C64 version is wonderful....

saimon69 20 May 2021 19:59

Barbarian + has music but then other problems

eXeler0 20 May 2021 21:32

Never played it on Amiga. =)
Had a c64/128 when Barbarian came out and it was fantastic on the 64 with the great chip tune by Richard Joseph (RIP).
2 player mode vs my brother, good times.

Tigerskunk 21 May 2021 07:51

Always thought of this as a lazy port, seeing how crazy amazing the C64 version was.

Disappointing.

Retro-Nerd 21 May 2021 09:18

I agree. Very boring Amiga port. The C64 and CPC versions used the hardware much better.

Exactly : the CPC version was awesome in a technical point of view : gfx and audio and I loved playing it.
I never managed to play to the Amiga version more than 5 minutes.
A good idea would be to refactor the amiga version (by doubling the size of the warrior for example). Perhaps somebody is interested in doing that ?

edit : here is an example of what could be nice. The warrior has its size increased by 50% (about 48x104 on the example). I have also increase the total view (always on low pal resolution 320x256 but the orginal view is only 304x192). It is quicky done with gimp but it gives an idea :

Barbarian + was done a couple of years ago by someone who also thought the original port was embarassing, no?

malko 21 May 2021 13:29

^ Don't you like Barbarian+ ?

Edit: damn... for a few seconds eXceler0 ;)

alain.treesong 21 May 2021 13:37

@eXeler0
@malko
Yes but barbarian + has not a good gameplay (I finished it after only 3 tries and because of the sorcerer in the two first tries) and is not playable on A500 (too slow).
Nice graphics anyway but disappointing. Sorry for the designers that probably put a lot of time in it.

Yeah, looks like the tool used (amos) was not to expectation - if someone want to make the engine in C please contact Colin or 10shu

Barbarian++ ? ;-)

alain.treesong 21 May 2021 19:40

It's an obvious troll but I'll say it anyway: Amos has nothing to do with the problem. But back to the barbarian topic.

@eXeler0
Yes why not Barbarian ++. After all we have an Amiga 1000++. Usually it is called Amiga 1200 :-)

HapyLeatherface 21 July 2021 16:08

I like it a lot when a game is not much too challenging

I like Barbarian + quite a lot , and I like Barbarian II , too ..

Well remember i was on the dev team (as musician but still): i seem to remember problem was the AI computation is pretty resource intensive if made in Amos the way was made

the c64 version with music activated has wonderful slowdowns. :laughing:laughing

and the hardware acceleration only used when you chop the head of your opponent is rubbish. the game runs at 25fps with music, and then you pass to 50 fps when decapitation occurs. awful...

Oh... I always wondered if there was a Barbarian+ 1.1 release I missed with improved AI (in particular smarter opponents against head-chop move) :nervous
With improved sounds and AI would be absolutely great IMHO...

mkrleza 10 January 2022 06:29

Whatever the others might say, I really enjoyed that game in my youth...
