best versions of desert and jungle strike ?

which verions are the best amiga pc snes megadrive ???? And why ?
perhaps cd32 for jungle strike ???

DDNI 19 December 2012 13:53

Hmmm I always felt the Megadrive versions were best.
It has been a long time since I played any version of those games though.

Hewitson 26 December 2012 08:50

Megadrive. Better controls, no loading, and IIRC slightly better graphics as well.

Peter 26 December 2012 13:53

+1 for megadrive, definitely.

Desert Strike on the Amiga has a lot of graphical enhancements over the Mega Drive version, as well as better sound and music. It has real shadows instead of black dithered pixels, more colourful cut-scenes, better explosions, and much nicer menus. Jungle Strike was more of a straight port to the Amiga with no improvements made.

Go to Youtube and watch recorded videos of gameplay on every platform. I like the PC version - that was also the last port.

SNES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Is7nOPlEKJ8

Cammy is right! The MegaDrive version looks kind of lame. Even the SNES port has better in-game graphics. The DOS version looks very similar to the Amiga, but they all fail when it comes to explosions. They still look best on the Amiga! :)

I think they knew that you can not see any difference with MegaDrive connected to CRT tv.

Peter 26 December 2012 22:53

The MD version of Desert Strike just kind of felt better to control for me...

Hewitson 25 January 2013 14:46

The Amiga version might have more colourful cut scenes, but for actual ingame graphics, I prefer the Megadrive. Also the Amiga version took ages to load, in fact all EA games did (especially Road Rash). Very poorly designed loading system.

A few weeks ago I tried the SNES version of Jungle Strike and it didn't look quite as well as I expected. And it played even worse. Then again, it is a long time since I played the Amiga version. And the composite connection SNES-TV certainly didn't help.
Maybe I should do a side by side comparison :confused
Also... is there a better way to connect a SNES to a TV than composite ?

Retro-Nerd 25 January 2013 16:02

Yes, buy a RGB cable for your SNES.

On Topic: The Amiga version of Desert Strike is pretty good. WHDLoad shortens the loading times and the new brilliant CD32 pad patch makes the controls more comfortable.

Whitesnake 28 January 2013 19:08

Desert Strike on the Amiga also plays a lot nicer if you run it in NTSC/60Hz

I've been trying to run Jungle Strike CD32 in NTSC/60Hz but I've been unsuccessful so far. :(

The game keeps switching it back to 50Hz when it runs.

Any ideas?

hiddens files on tracks + RNC compression involved :P

Otherwise, the plan was to overcome the megadrive version, it's stated in the manual : Better graphics, sounds, and playability.

Megadrive version was first, for the amiga they wanted to do better :)

And they did !

There are also some minor changes in Jungle Strike, status bar along the bottom of the screen and a weapon indicator on the top right of the screen.

I think the enhanced version also features bigger sprites in places and a slightly larger playfield compared to the regular version, not just a title screen update.

T_hairy_bootson 29 January 2013 01:36

Could you move helicopter left and right (jink) on the amiga version of desert strike?

edit: Checked the manual on HOL and you can while holding the fire button, so you have to be shooting to do it.

I am extremely sorry to bump and old thread but I just felt the desire to play Desert Strike and realised there were far more titles to the series!

So I want to play it from start to finish. I recall Desert Strike on the Amiga. From the wiki page it states Amiga conversion was meant to be better than Mega Drive version. This is also the case for Jungle Strike.

I don't mind playing it on DOS since I have a laptop now for DOS gaming (has on-board DOS compatible AC97!)

So to avoid playing the least graphically appealing version, I know Amiga graphics were superior to MD but what about to SNES / DOS ports? Also the PSP re-release was based on which port?

From Urban Strike onwards there was no Amiga port so I will play this on another console.

I have a PS2 as well as PS Vita if it helps anyone in helping me decide which versions to play.

Many thanks!

Mega Drive version of Desert Strike has the advantage of having a button for each type of ammo and no loading. Other than that, the Amiga version is better on every way, both graphics and soundwise. I haven't played any other version, but EA games on SNES at that period were pretty lame most of the time, so I wouldn't bet on it.

I Remember seeing the DOS version, I remember it asked for a lot of memory to run (My father's 486 couldn't run it) and when I finally saw it running, I wasn't impressed. But I really don't remember how it looks.

Jungle Strike in the other hand... it's *great* on Amiga, but I think Mega-Drive has the edge on this one.

I think you'll be for a hard time with Soviet Strile and Nuclear Strike. Unlike the previous games, those aged very badly IMO, with horrible framerates and hard to swallow 3D graphics.

Retro-Nerd 01 November 2019 18:46

Avoid the SNES version of Desert Strike. It has some nasty slowdowns when too much objects are on the screen. Unbearable.

lesta_smsc 01 November 2019 21:11

Cool... Thank you.

Damn! The Nuclear Strike is incompatible with PS2 slim! Grrr... PC port it'll have to be for that.

Would the PC version compare well to parts 1 and 2? I'm just thinking there probably PC port all the way through?
