Dunno if there is the best choice... depends on what you prefer :) I am bad at aiming so I choose mercenary :D I also like preachers medikit (you can swap specials between characters)

TCD 26 May 2008 19:19

I prefer Gentleman 'cause his 'brains' provide great assistence in the later level. His special is pretty useless though ;).

Graham Humphrey 26 May 2008 21:26

My best effort yet - got to World 3 for the first time ever - gets really difficult though; I missed loads of stuff on the early levels of World 3 as I was more interested in merely staying alive...

Personally I don't recommend Mercenary. His weapon is too much random spreaded and it is hard to aim the target, especially in World 3 and World 4 where enemies need a lot of hits. Though, he has good special weapon which you can throw to areas you can't reach. Navie is a bit too slow and you need spend some money to improve his haste. The same goes with Thug. Preacher is quite good but his special weapon is a miserable gadget for newbies. If you are rookie and have difficulties playing the game, try him.

I strongly recommend Brigand and Gentleman. Both have good and bad sides. Brigand has a powerful gun which can shot in four lines (when fully upgraded). Unfortunatelly his special weapons are not so useful. It is easier to shot the enemy using normal gun than loading up the special. Gentleman has great special weapons. He has monster repeller and attractor. The former is great help in farther levels. His weak side is that his carried gun can not be upgraded more than just to two lines.

If you consider whom to choose as your company, take Thug or Navie. They are slower than you and you can easily shoot down the enemies before they do it (you get the points). They are just helping you to kill them and maybe also collect some money (if you let them). Boost their Wisdom only when you have to. If you don't have to, do not do it. The wiser they are, the less they shoot enemies, they try to avoid them and collect everything they can. In such circumstances sometimes you have to deal with monsters while they collect food and power which is needed for you (they should take it because you let them not because they want to).

Nevertheless, the most important thing in the whole game is not about who you play with but how many enemies you killed and how many keys and special gadgets you collected. Here are some of my tips:

- For each key, each activated node you get points. The same goes with enemies. Try to kill all the foes you can spot. Go back to places you have already been to see if none of them appeared.
- Remember that as long as the cave from which the enemies come out is open, they will be coming out. Wait for them to kill them. Next to points, they give you money which you can spend in the shop.
- Remember not to shoot the suckers when they have just left the cave. Let them come out a bit because if you don't very often they will not leave a money coin.
- Also the most important thing - explore level as much as you can. Try to get everywhere you can. The harder the route is, the more points and money it gives.
- If you have to choose which key to collect, take the one which is farther from you.
- If you have more than one exit opened, choose the latter one. It will gratify you when you start the next level.
- Observe the level and behaviour of things. If you took a key and suddenly the other one appeared, do not take it. Go and see what happened and then come back to take it.

Thanks for the tips Mailman! One more question, how do you switch special weapons? Also, can you force your partner to use his?

TCD 27 May 2008 06:56

Hi adolescent,

have a look in the manual here.

Fuck my hand is sore!! :shocked Got stuck on the very last level where the fireballs roll down towards you.. I destroyed the first 2 generators that they were protecting, but the top 2 don't seem to blow up!?.. oh hang on, the forcefield around the whole machine, i noticed that was down after i destroyed the first 2 and it had a switch behind it.... damn, oh shit.. all i had to do was flick it to make the other 2 generators vulnerable yes!?!???.. aarrrghh...

ha, hey graham. Thanks. I was on a cruise in the Mexican Riviera for the week. Great to be back home.

Graham Humphrey 28 May 2008 13:30

17 people have entered now, the highest in the competition so far... so much for my fears about the lack of entries ;)

john4p 28 May 2008 13:45

You'll have to get pretty far into the game if you even want to get 1 point this round...

Graham Humphrey 28 May 2008 15:30

Indeed, the standards are being set very high now.

It is turning into a full time job just updating the scores!!

blade002 28 May 2008 15:42

I had actually forgotten how much i enjoyed The Chaos Engine!, which is why i am still able to keep coming back and retrying :) The game is a legendary part of Amiga History with the Amazing music of Richard Joseph ( RIP ), although trying to squeeze in every single last point to reach top spot and search and remember which keys and which areas are available here and there when you use them, makes it a little stressful .. lol.

One Tip: Don't let greed rule you in the game, as in, if you see a gold coin and subconsciously you know it might get you into trouble if you try to grab it, then DON'T !!!.... Avoid GREED at all costs, it will get you killed sooner than you expect!. lol.

@John4p: I know you are going to topple my score eventually, so i know this is not the end of our battle my friend :)

john4p 28 May 2008 19:22

@blade: Oh, well - that way you can enjoy this game even longer and more intense! ;)
I'm thankful for the competition - without it I'd never ever completed Pacman Deluxe, Jump 'n Roll (as far as it goes...), SWIV, The Chaos Engine and more titles to come (well, I still need to complete the Chaos Engine as I only reached the last level yet and both times died to those fireballs/energyballs).

Well that's really made things even tighter at the top...

Please go back to the Mexican Riviera :lol
