RGB and mouse sound good, what about a standard PS/2 keyboard conenctor? Is that possible?
Amiga keyboards are fucking expensive and a PS/2 keyboard would be dead easy to get.

HOwever, for the RGB conenctor, why not stick to a standard like SCART? 23 pin plugs are a pain and a SCART cable is dead easy to get.
Heck, even a DIN formatted like the Sega Megadrive RGB port would be better.

As for sound, why would you need that on the board? The CD32 has standard RCA plugs for it.
Forget about parallel or serial, not needed.

So let me get this straight: if we buy that board, besides having RGB and a mouse port, will it have a throughport for other expansions to be connected that might add Fast RAM and IDE?

If this is the case, definitely sign me up for one!!

Keyboard is on the expansion connector. As is the Paula floppy disk interface. So both are possible.

Here is a pic of the Beta, there is not a lot of room to play with if i didnt want the card sticking over the top of the CD32 (which i didn't). The RGB video connector is attached and there is very limited options for placement... Facing upwards/downwards is not an option, the power button interferes on the right side so the best/only/logical place is the left side, I may add a 15 pin video connector too just so people could choose their connector type, and of course it would be more compact.

If people have suggestions i'm listening

The upper connector will allow expansion cards to be connected inside the CD32 and the lower connector connects to the expansion port. Every pin/signal is reproduced on the upper connector for full compatibility. I could use a panel mount 23 pin connector, but for $16, not an option

I am not 100% familiar with the Scart but i believe i have all necessary signals transferred to the 23 pin connector... Red (3), Green (4), Blue (5), CSync (10), Grounds (16 - 20) and 5v (23)

I would gladly buy 2 if they had 8mb and IDE. If no memory or IDE, I'd probably wait for someone else to make it before buying one (No skills myself for something like that =).

hopefully the connectors don't dry up. One of the main reasons for doing this is to give incentive to people to build something now that they don't have to worry about using an edge connector and their expansion boards can be tucked away neatly inside the CD32


I did find this 15 pin connector that could be used as a panel mount type which means it would point to the rear so i will add its footprint to the board

I could possibly use a solder cup for the DB25 pin and make the holes big enough to allow the solder cups to go through and be soldered to the board so it points to the rear (which i think is best. This way i can make the board narrower and place the 25db above the connectors

I just redone design so the RGB connector points to the rear... I customized the holes so a solder cup type connector will go through and be able to be soldered "

Please consider, for a few dollars more (with sensible batch size) making the PCB 4 layer so we can have better power delivery. My SX32 Pro has issues getting enough power from the CD32 motherboard due to connections to the CD32 connector. With the thin tracking shown in your diagrams, you will have an inductive power path, not ideal.

For RGB out, I believe you need to add 47R series resistors to help with the loading as it is shared with the S-Video encoder. Ideally you should add a buffer amplifier, though I appreciate real estate is at a premium.

Have you seen the SX32 shuttleboard?

Back in 2012, I designed a product called Amikey, a low cost PC keyboard to Amiga adaptor using a $1 PIC12F629 microcontroller. It was intended for the A1200 but would easily work on the CD32. If you want the hardware/software I will make it available.

Finally, great work on finding a source of the MCA connectors for the CD32.

Hi Ian,

thanks for the tips. I looked at the board and i am able to easily increase all the vcc pins from 0.006" to 0.016". would that be sufficient?

I'd like to try to put the PC keyboard circuit on the board, i'm pretty sure i can squeeze it in, I think thats a great addition and i'd like to make it part of the basic design. Do you want to post it on your site and link it ?

I'm interested in any 'low-cost' expansion for my CD32, rgb is nice! Maybe you know somebody in the scene who could make a simple ide & fastram expansion as an add-on (sold seperately) on top of your design, so you can join forces!

Let me kow what you want for them. I do have lots of 23 pin backshells that i printed. Unfortunately my 3D printer was damaged when i moved so i cannot do any more work with it. It needs a new bearing housing. I really don't like the fact that the bearings were housed in a "snap in" plastic housing which is constantly under tension, so hopefully soon i will have it back working.

As I said, if this allows for a future expansion to be created in an easier way, I will definitely buy one. RGB is cool, and PS/2 mouse and keyboard would be brilliant! But if impossible, don't worry! I'll still support this because I been looking for a decent, affordable CD32 expansion for ages and this could be our only chance. And it won't stick out like a mofo!

I'm sorting out the Amikey (PC Keyboard adaptor) files, will put them online this weekend.

Increasing the power tracks will help. 0.016" tracks can safely take 1.2 Amps compared to the 0.6 Amp of 0.06", with lower resistance, assuming 1oz copper.

Can I pitch a leftfield idea?

Forget the 2nd MCA connector and add an FPGA and I/O connectors to the expansion board?

A 4.8" x 1.95" PCB has a lot of room on both sides even after the connector ;) Have managed to squeeze a 1GHz PowerPC system on a smaller card @ work :spin Before anyone suggests it, no will not design a PowerPC add-on.:banghead

You could add video, IDE, floppy and PS/2 connectors + support PLD/FPGA with some careful planning. I not sure you could fit a SIMM socket, not without playing with a PCB design and looking at packing factors.

Off to play with Arduino's again...
