If it can still read disks then chances are high that the write-protect sensor is broken. You can see this sensor as a little pin on the left side of the drive when you look into the slot. ( it is positioned so that it will detect if the write-protect-hole in the disk is closed or not )

You can try very carefully to repair the pin, which is like a small switch. But be very carefully since there ia a tiny spring in there which you will never find again if it once falls to the ground ;)
If you cannot repair it then you can just solder the two pads together which are normally closed by the sensor.
But then no disk will be write-potected any more !
