Help! It wont start!

Hi Folks,

new to the board.

I am having a problem with WINUAE. I have installed it. When i click on the icon to fire it up, it comes up with the following warning message:

'windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions for this item'

Any ideas?

Download the zip archive, extract it to a folder outside 'program files' (e.g. to another partition) and see if it starts up this time

Ok. I did that, double clicked the .exe file and nothing happened.

I extracted it to a file on my desktop.

Does that help at all?

Hi pwig and welcome to EAB!

Try to set WinUAE to run with administrator rights : http://vistasupport.mvps.org/run_as_administrator.htm (assuming you use Vista or Windows 7)

Right sorted this last night.

I was running a commodo firewall without me knowing and it blocked the program from starting up

Still sorted out now

SWOS here we come. I even bought me one of them retro joysticks to use.

Some overly paranoid malware tools may detect winuae as suspicious because of winpcap support (used for network card emulation)

I use Comodo firewall too, the additional security layer is a good tool to block communications between some installed software and their editors, but it displays an alerts each time a modification is made to the system.

This is especially annoying during software installations. I hope the firewall itself is more competent than Windows', but I am not even positive it is so.

WinUAE gives two alerts IIRC, one being for using DirectX 8 dll.
