ffs-partition visible but not accessible

Hi,

On my A4000 there are two visible disks. The primary ADH0: (why is it called ADH0: btw? As I remember harddrives where namned DH0: DH1: aso) and there is also another visible on the workbench called "DH2:\0*.m" can anyone tell me what this is? When I try to access it I get the message "Non DOS-Media in device DH2" (might not be the exact english error message since my OS is in swedish).

If I start hdtoolbox and check the partition I can see:

Size: 4GB
Filesystem: "International FFS"

As I can remember from the good old days the FFS-filesystem isn't anything special and should be readable, or? Do I have to do anything to be able to access it? maybe I just need to format it. anyways, I do not want to do that until I have checked my other options here. The partition might contain cool stuff that I'd miss out if I re-formatted the partition!

My primary drive is using something called "CFS\00" and works fine. I can't remember that there was something like that when I was into amiga. Maybe someone can tell me more bout that file system aswell.

btw; The computer is running AmigaOS 3.5 and the total since of the harddrive is aprox 56GBs. But as for now only 700mb's are used.

Best Regards,
Stefan

HDD partitions can be called whatever you want. HDToolbox by default takes the first letter of the manufacurer's name and adds DH0 to it. So Maxtor drives are called MDH0, Seagate drives SDH0 and so on.

There can be several causes for this.

One is that you did something which prevents the system from reading beyond the 4GB limit. For example you downgraded FFS to a version below 45 or you removed the patch of scsi.device (both can be done by disabling the AmigaOS ROM Update) or the HDD is now connected to a controller which is not able to access more than 4GB.

Another possible cause is that the previous owner did something to the HDD which shall prevent you from reading his personal data.

Please run Check4GB and copy its output into this thread. It might give us some clues what happened to the HDD.

I do not know about the controller. but I did check file versions of the files you mentioned.

L:fastfilesystem version is 45.13

You also mentioned something about "AmigaOS ROM Update", I did find a file called like that in DEVS: aswell. version is 44.57. How do I apply it?

ok great! I'll run it as soon as I have setup a way of copying files between my pc->amiga.

Thanks

If it has exactly that name and SetPatch is run in s:startup-sequence, then it's automatically activated at boot time.

Open a shell window and enter

version scsi.device

Should be version 43.30 or higher. If it's version 40 then the ROM update is not active.

A MAC partition could show such name.

Mine is 43.35. And there was no problem creating an additional 50GB partition so it seems everythings in order! The case is probably as zipper says, that the "DH2:\0*.m" is an mac-partition. There is some shapeshifter stuff on the drive.
