VGA to DVI adaptor question

Hi folks, long time no post!

I'm wondering this:

I know you can use a DVI-VGA adaptor for a signal coming from a computer to a monitor. ie: VGA cable connected via adaptor to DVI socket on a graphics card.

BUT, can you use it the other way around? ie: VGA cable connected to VGA socket on computer & DVI adaptor plugged into the DVI plug on a monitor?

If that would work, I could then connect my Indivision to a DVI monitor.

Please ask for clarification if the above doesn't make sense

PZ.

There is DVI-A (analogue), DVI-D (digital) and DVI-I (both). You can connect DVI-A to VGA and vice versa per adapter. But there is no adapter for digital<->analogue. This would need rather expensive electronics.

The DVI output on a graphics card usually is DVI-I, so it can be connected to an analogue monitor. But the DVI input on a monitor in most cases is DVD-D (digital-only), so it is not possible to connect an analogue signal to it with only an adapter.

I'm pretty sure that wont work.

There are some boxes you can buy that have a VGA imput and then connect to a DVI or HDMI monitor, but as Thomas says you cannot connect an an analogue output (which I'm pretty sure the Indivision is) to a digital input directly.
