Guru - It Just Gets Better

Greetings,
Anyone who's been following my Miggy saga will know that...yes, it's a damned pain and hours of frustration boiled down into one hard to swallow unit.

Latest error = Guru Meditation

8000 0025 000FFFC0

Only on cold boot, seems that the Quantum fireball I have in there is too slow for the GVP controller, system will only boot on a warm start after cold and even then it's quite hit and miss as to whether the main HDD starts properly.

I've tested the main HDD, no bad sectors, the only unusual thing is that instead of the power light flashing at it's normal speed for a guru error, it seems to flash quite a bit faster.

If anyone can recommend a nice fast less than 4Gb SCSI HDD, I would be appreciative, don't really care if it's new or used, but must not contain any bad sectors.

Does anyone know what the usual symptoms are for a failing A2000 supply, are there any common faults?

Paul

Oh damn, that's bad luck

Failing power supply typically cause random gurus... Get a multimeter out and, if you know how to use it, use it . Check 5v as that's what drives the majority of the board IIRC.

Are you powering your drive from the on-board connector, or a power supply connector directly?

I don't think the GVP had an option to wait a long time for initiation, but on the other hand a fireball isn't the slowest drive around to spin up. I *think* I had one which was absolutely fine...

That guru is a non-recoverable CPU trap (8000) with a user identified exception (0025) that I can't find a reference for...

Good luck. I know how frustrating this sort of thing can be!

The drive is being powered from the supply directly. I tested the 5volt rail, it's sitting at 5.19V, the 12volt is sitting at 11.96, what I was more worried about was ripple, ie. dried out caps.

Ah...

Another simple-ish option is to put a PC power supply on there in the appropriate place... Stedy's guide is good. If you go that way then don't forget to change the TICK jumper to use VSYNC rather than power tick...

And remember: 5.2V on the +5V rail is no good for your Amiga! Also some expansion cards don't work with video "tick" instead the proper one.

There is a hack on Aminet to make a tick circuit (a bit convoluted).

5.2 should be fine... It's within tolerance, which is ±5%

What expansions doesn't work with the tick set to video? It's not on the expansion connector that I can see... It's not even present on Z2 or 3, so I'm genuinely intrigued!

Video cards and some video-related cards.

Microway FlickerFixer for sure will not work without it
Or any card fitted to the Videoslot that requires a timebase.

Riiiiight, gotcha. I guess Pin14 - Timebase - is the issue. However, the purpose of the j300 is to set where TICK is derived from... if it's being generated by the video chips rather than from the power tick surely it can still be passed to the flicker fixer? I can see why a FF wouldn't work without a power supply tick if J300 is set to source the tick externally, but if it's internally sourced... ?

Anyhow, good luck solving the problem

Greetings,
You bastards hijacked my thread

I would hazard a guess that the guru is being generated by the HDD / GVP combination. I have no flicker fixer installed, it's just bog standard A2000 apart from the funky Combo card.

Guilty as changed

First rule of diagnosis: strip out everything then build up.

Problem is that if it's a PSU related problem, you might not find it until you load your PSU enough to cause the wobble...

Can you hack a PC AT PSU into there easily?

Greetings,

I think so, I read the Stedy guide to PSU destruction, I think that may ultimately be the best option, I have tons of the old ATX PSU lying around, certainly makes better sense, if the supply carks it, I just replace it with another something around 300 watts.

Just unplug the drive from the scsi bus, but leave it powered. Try booting from something else. See what happens.
