I suppose you are using Amiga LHA.. If not, do it, because any Windows LHA will completely fuck up your filenames.
After you extracted everything (lha -x will work, as you say) you need INstaller to run that Install file. Installer can be nabbed off the Aminet (http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/aminet) Hope that helps |

Installer
The installers included with the files that you downloaded from the WHDLoad site are based on scripts. They use a small program called 'Installer' which interprets those scripts to make standard installs.
If you select the icon, right click and select Information from the menu, so will see that 'Installer' is specified to be used to run this script. So, you need to find that Installer program and put it in the 'c' directory of your hard disk (I assume you are using a hard disk...). The Installer program is a standard Commodore program, but I can't remember if it is included with Workbench. Are you sure that you know what you downloaded from the WHDLoad site - that these files are merely installers for original copies of games and not the games themselves? |

I think you just dloaded the installer and not the game... whdload.org won't carry any games.

I have no clue about what you are dloading
but now you will need LZX, which is different to LHA. Get it from the Aminet.

I did not have any problems extracting .lha files using WinRAR. You may give it a try.

Power Archiver
Power Archiver is good. It has internal support for LHA compression and decompression (not through a DOS command) and it's free.

The PowerArchiver version I tried was arse witH Amiga LHA files... It just fucked them up completely... I haven't tried WinRAR or WinACE, I always decompress with LHA on the Amiga, it's superior to them all

LZX
The best thing I've found to unLZX an amiga game is on aminet and it's called something like this: UnLZX 95. All you have to do with this is "Drag and Drop" the amiga LZX file into it and it uncompresses it, it has yet to mess-up any of my files, so of which wouldn't uncompress even using lzx in WinUAE!!
I also agree with RCK WinACE 2.* is the best for unpacking LHA files. |

Cody mentioned PowerArchiver, and while the blurb sounded good on their home page, there was something I didn't like about the program back when I tried it. Before that program came about, the app was called EasyZip 2000 (last version was 4.6 from Dec. 1999) and I fortunately kept my archive of that. I still use it today. It supports zip, lha, tar, gzip, cab, and bh (Black Hole, whatever the hell that is...) for conversions, plus it will additionally extract rar, arj, arc, ace, zoo, jar (Java ARchives), UUE and XXE.
One of its coolest features is the ability to convert any of those conversion formats. Meaning a zip file to an lha, an lha file to a zip, etc. To be fair, it uses lzh algorithms rather than the Amiga lha's superior compression, and of course there is no lzx support. Those two things would have made the program perfect. Furthermore, it will create self extracting files, is fully configurable, and features Explorer shell extensions (even for most of the other compression formats!). One of my favorite shell extensions is Extract Here, which is very useful. And archiving with complete paths is easy, as well, unlike with WinZip. If you open an archive with a setup.exe file, it asks you if you would like to install, which it does from a temp directory. I rarely use that, but I have and it works quite well. Finally, it remembers the last several dirs I extracted files to, which WinZip does not. Useful when I want to extract a zip file to C:\Program Files\WinUAE\Games\ without having to navigate to that path. I just down arrow once or twice, hit enter and it's done. |
