Phase 5 - Upcoming Blizzard PPC Accelerator

I haven't seen any discussion on this in this forum but it Seems that Phase 5 might be coming back with a new release of the Blizzard PPC Accelerator.

https://www.generationamiga.com/2017...c-accelerator/

I think the sourcing of the 68060 Chips or even the PCC 603+ might make this a very limited release product.

Any thoughts?

Don't really see the point in releasing a few new cards and they'll probably cost a fortune.

They have posted photos of new unpopulated PCB on FB. They say the cards should be ready for sale this year....

This has been going on for quite a while now. It seems the phase5 assets were acquired by an ex-employee who has since been making quite a bit of noise about it but hasn't had anything to show other than regular rants on social media (with associated comment censorship), snippets from schematics, and photos of 20-year-old prototypes and unpopulated boards. There hasn't yet been anything that shows me they aren't anything other than one guy with a bit of cash and some crazy ideas. So I wouldn't hold your breath, especially since they were originally supposed to be available at the end of *last* year.

Naturally though I would love to be proven wrong, and have the market flooded with cheap PPC accelerators. But I just can't see it.

I'm not quite sure, but on the German A1K there seem to be some doubts about this new Phase5-company and those involved. Maybe someone here has more insight in this?

Like i mentioned above, he shoved NEWLY produced PCBs, unpopulated. Also he shoved some other parts like connectors. He even sent one board to a repair guy in England. It does sound a bit like mission impossible to find all the other parts but we will see. It will sure cost a fortune if it comes out.

New PCBs mean precisely zero. If you had access to phase5's assets, you could stick the PCB descriptor files in a zip file, send them off to a manufacturer, and a week later, have a box of newly made PCBs. All without knowing what PCB even stands for. It means nothing.

Likewise, buying up a few connectors from eBay (which is apparently what was done) doesn't mean much. Finding a steady supply of the parts will be a big problem, then finding a manufacturer to assemble and test the PCBs, program the CPLDs and so on. That sort of manufacturing capacity will be prohibitively expensive. They could be hand populated, programmed and tested of course, but again, that is expensive technician time amounting to hundreds of Euro in labour alone per board.

Bottom line, we need to see one of these newly manufactured PCBs, fully assembled and working in an A1200 before it means anything at all, and even then there's a long way to go between that pilot run and a manufactured product that's available to buy.

By the way, unless I've missed something, the repair guy who got a blank PCB was in Sweden, not the UK. To be fair, he seems more positive about the whole thing, but that could just be the prospect of being able to build a new accelerator himself.

What I want to say: We should stop this endless discussion and wait what this year will maybe happen. We can give him a chance, till yet no request for money, just many posting on Facebook and the community there is totally different compared to forum users.

The link in the OP only has pictures of the unpopulated PCBs which were first shown in February. As Daedalus said, the difficult part is securing the parts (connector, 060, etc.) and assembling the cards. As long as there is no working prototype, there is not much to see here.

And testing, QA, distribution, sales, etc etc etc etc...
And this is one dude? Who seems too busy on social media to be able to do any of the above mentioned.

Yeah, that too. Well, he promised major news in June, I hope it won't turn out to be a big nothingburger.

Don't count on anything being less expensive than fleabay gouging prices, if he ever produces ANYTHING. He's stated the PPC board is going to retail for $1500+ USD and is limited to a production run of 499 boards. If you contact him for information, he asks for a prepayment to "reserve your place in line." Yeah, right.

IMHO it was a nice option till he got to those prices. I just prefer to await for a release of a Vampire for the 1200.

I think this is totally pointless concept....what would you do with a slow PPC plug-in card for a Classic Amiga these days? I guess you could run an obsolete build of OS4 and older PPC software but that's about it really.
