I hope so!

By the way, did you already know these campy but informative old school VHS DPaint course videos?

It made me realize again how far ahead of its time the tool was, 25 years ago.

Thanks for the links! Jim Sachs, one of my Amiga game graphics heroes, next to Mark Coleman and Franck Sauer. I had a bit of correspondence with Jim via e-mail in the 1990s. He's a sympathetic guy.

By the way, regarding the Alt + LMB issue in FS-UAE… There was an Amiga keyboard key combination that was a LMB click equivalent. I believe it was Alt + Amiga key. I remember using that a lot to place an animbrush at an exact pixel location, because an actual mouse click sometimes moved the pointer a pixel away.

I also can't get that LMB click keyboard key combination to work. This makes me wonder if any keyboard key combination is working in FS-UAE. Or at least combinations of modifier keys.

Yep, it's the Left Alt + Amiga button that equals a left mouse button click. That also doesn't work in FS-UAE.

yep, I agree, Jim Sachs is a cool man, was a really good interview with him

try hold LAMIGA + "click" LALT for left amiga mouse click, RAMIGA+RALT for right click (menu)
just tested with winuae, does work here.

maybe it is an issue with the "native mouse capture" mode in fs-uae?
not sure how it is handled by fs-uae.

#1) just saw your new reply:
Quote:
in the source code docs for the keyboard input you can read for example:
LALT ------ keyboard_key_kp_lalt ----- Different physical position on Mac
so the mac ALT key doesnt match the one on windoz boxes.

Unhappy

Any Alt + other key or mousebutton combination doesn't seem to work in FS-UAE for MacOS.

Now I'm forced to return to Windows for WinUAE.

just d/led fs-uae portable and gave it a go.
still fighting with the setup, no clue how to get it started, but in the log (cache/logs/fs-uae.log.txt) file i could see this line:
"INPUT: Using default modifier key LALT" no clue what it does mean, but when it gets used for something "default" it may "explain" the strange behavior regarding the lalt key.

WinUAE runs fine under Wine in Linux, its also faster and more stable than fs-uae.
Personal opinion but to me fs-uae sux big time, from the downright horrible UI to the slowness of it.
If you use WinUAE often it may be worth trying it under Wine to save switching OS's all the time.

Thanks for checking out FS-UAE, Emufan, appreciated.

There are ways to reconfigure the keys in the configuration text file, I haven't looked at that yet, but I wonder why the default behaviour doesn't seem to allow Alt + keyboard key combinations. You'd think it's a technical issue.

I'll definitely consider such an option, thank you.

By the way, I'd like to invite you to my Retro Games • Retro Tech pinboard at Pinterest. It's stuffed with sweet digital nostalgia.

You need to have a Pinterest account to view everything though. For example, GIF animations don't work for visitors that aren't logged in. I think it's stupid, but that's the way it is.

can you try something like ( settings --> advanced settings) :
keyboard_key_lshift = action_key_lalt

should map the left shift key to the emulated amiga left alt key.

here are some more input mapping values for fs-uae.

#1) regarding wine, there seems to be a port for mac osx

#2) wine #2, maybe a better link/version of wine for mac osx

Alt+cmd and alt+arrows work fine for me here. Make sure you have disabled joystick in input options.

I've tried disabling the joystick, but that didn't help. How did you do it? Did you disable the joystick in the first drop-down of the joystick port configuration or the second? Or both?

It might also be a MacOS-only issue in FS-UAE.

I'll try the key reconfiguration in a moment.

Joystick & Mouse Port:
Nothing -> Default (no device)
Mouse -> Default (Mouse)

I use Mac as well, so it's not a Mac problem as such.

I'm on version 2.6.2, so perhaps it was broken some time after that.

Have you seen there's a "full keyboard emulation" option?

Put "full_keyboard = 1" in the config file/Custom Configuration, or you can toggle it on/off with F12+K.

It might help you. I have it switched on permanently as it blocks some Mac keyboard combinations from taking over.

Ok, interesting…

• The Full Keyboard option enables the Alt + Left Amiga key combination to emulate the left mouse button click. But animpainting in DPaint (painting while the frames auto-flip) still doesn't work.

• I've just discovered that animpainting does work when using Alt + RMB in stead of Alt + LMB. This enables a crude workaround when working with one-color animbrushes, setting the desired color to the background color, changing the Paint mode to Color, and animpainting with Alt + RMB.

Could you maybe try if animpainting with Alt + LMB perhaps does work for you in FS-UAE? Just:

1: Start DPaint IV or a higher version.
2: From the Anim drop-down menu go to Frames ➔ Set #…
3: Enter a number of frames in the following input window, like 10.
4: Hold Alt and start painting while keeping your left mouse button down.
5: The frames should start flipping while you paint, so you're creating an animation in stead of a painting. Over here this only works when using the right mouse button.

Thanks! If it turns out to work for you, it might be an issue regarding the Wacom pen tip, which is my equivalent of a left mouse button click.
