Question Return to Deluxe Paint

Hi,

As a former Amiga game designer (see my HOL page for info), I just can't find a modern pixel art tool that equals the versatility of good old DPaint.

Overwhelmed by a pixel art love revival, I really want to return to DPaint, but I am a complete emulation rookie. Any help on how to get DPaint running on MacOS would be greatly appreciated.

Some questions:

• What is the best Amiga emulator for MacOS? FS-UAE?
• What's the best workflow to get DPaint up and running with as little hassle as possible?
• Is there maybe a prefab pack containing all the necessary files, such as a Kickstart, Workbench and harddisk file containing DPaint? I've got the original DPaint IV and V in my Amiga software collection, so it wouldn't be piracy.
• What's the easiest way to convert DPaint's IFF images and animations to GIF images and animations for use in MacOS?

Many thanks in advance!

Question

Hi again,

In the mean time I've got FS-UAE running with a HD file containing DPaint IV. I forgot that Dpaint IV already supported the AGA graphics modes.

It's pure magic having a working DPaint on my screen again. It must have been almost 20 years ago or so since I last worked with DPaint.

There's only one issue I can't seem to resolve. I'm working with a Wacom Cintiq tablet, and FS-UAE uses only a small portion of the Cintiq screen to drive the Amiga mouse pointer. This results in the pointer accelerating past the position of my Wacom pen. If anyone happens to know how I can resolve this, I'd greatly appreciate that. I've switched the Amiga Mouse in the FS-UAE Launcher to a Cintiq entry in the drop-down menu, but then the pointer doesn't move at all.

Many thanks in advance.

Ah, entering "mouse_integration = 1" in the FS-UAE Launcher's Custom Configuration window solved the issue!

Hey Metin, I remember your voxel art from back in 2011, in oarticular the Galaga one. You were ahead of the trend with that, Crossy Road only came out later in 2014. I vaguely remember you had a concept for a voxel isometric car racing game? Did that one work out?

Hi Twenty90seven,

I'm flattered that you remember my work. Crossy Road, yeah, I still have to sue them for a couple of million dollars for stealing my voxel style.

Nope. Both the coder and I were too busy doing commissioned jobs, in order to remain able to pay the mortgage. But I had fun creating the voxel graphics.

Best regards from the Netherlands,

Metin

By the way, I've just discovered a new issue. One of the Wacom pen buttons serves as my right mouse button, but the right-click menus in DPaint only open for a short moment, then disappear again, no matter if I hold down the right mousebutton.

This only occurs when I switch to MacOS full screen mode though. Does anyone recognize this issue?

Thanks,

Metin

Not a great solution, more of a work-around for now but see "red" text below:

Quote:
Mouse Substitution

Left-Amiga + M Flips through each open screen.

Left-Amiga + N Flips to the Workbench screen.

Left-Amiga + V Activates the leftmost button in a requester.

Left-Amiga + B Activates the rightmost button in a requester with more than one button.

Amiga + Arrows Moves the pointer.

Amiga + Shift + Arrows Moves the pointer faster.

Amiga + Right-Alt Performs a RMB click.

Amiga + Left-Alt Performs a LMB click.

Cool, thanks a lot Damien!

I'm currently working around it by manually maximizing the screen in height, and adjusting the width until I get a square pixel aspect. In full-screen mode the pixel aspect becomes too wide, and in window mode the right-mousebutton menu issue is gone.

It's not that FS-UAE is the best Amiga emulator for the Mac as much as the fact that it's the only one, and it doesn't cater much to pixel artists. The default window and screen modes of FS-UAE distort the pixels so much that you can't really use it for pixel painting.

You could try running WinUAE in WINE, but that combination comes with its own set of problems.

Thanks for the info, Idrougge. For now I'm happy with FS-UAE, especially when activating its Warp mode (eliminates frame update limits), for a smooth workflow.

I've discovered though that the disappearing right-mousebutton menus issue also occurs when not working in full screen mode. I'm curious what the right way is to avoid it.

Hmm… the issue seems to not occur if I deactivate the Warp mode. Well, I can live with this for the time being.

I'm re-exploring Dpaint right now. Is there anyone here working with DPaint using FS-UAE on a Mac? I'm trying to find the key combination that allows you to paint while the animation frames auto-flip (AnimPainting). It was something like holding Control + Amiga key while painting or so, but I can't find the right keyboard combo.

You may also have a look at PersonalPaint what is similar to DPaint but has more features like different file formats (load/save).

Do you still have your Deluxe Paint manual? The reason I ask is because it was a particularly good manual and not only will the key combo be in there but also a refresher on everything else.
Let me know if not, perhaps I can find mine.

You can find some Deluxe Paint manuals on BombJack's website:

... Using Deluxe Paint II
... Using Deluxe Paint Second Edition

I've also put the following in The Zone!:

... Deluxe Paint 4 Manual.zip
... Deluxe Paint IV - Docs.txt

Alt key turns on animpainting.

Thanks a lot for all the info and links guys, much appreciated!

Daxb, thanks. I remember PPaint. It lacks animation though. I also remember animating in The Disney Studio. Simple, but effective for animation.

Rare J, I should still have the manual in the DPaint box, good point, I'll check it.

Damien, thanks for the links and the Zone downloads, you're my hero of the day.

Apex and Idrougge, thank you too!

Here's a photo of DPaint running on my Wacom Cintiq. It's magical. I've never been so in touch with the DPaint interface.

It must be a while since you last used PPaint. It has had animation for a long while.

Only about 20 years. Good to know that it has animation. I will definitely check it out.

Holding the Alt key for animpainting doesn't work here using FS-UAE for MacOS. Haven't figured out how to do animpainting yet, and how to grab an animbrush. Twenty years time has faded away about half of my DPaint knowledge.
