Amiga Raytracing Society

Hey everyone!

We are a group of Amiga enthusiasts that focus on making 3D films using Amiga computers.
Since the Group's creation 2 years ago, one 3D demo has been released, aired for the first time at the Compusphere 2014 as a WildCompo entry.

You can watch it here:
[ Show youtube player ]

As of February 2017 two more demos are under production, one of them having completed the storyboard and is currently undergoing Concept Art drawings.

We are looking for people of various Amiga Art interests (e.g. MOD musicians, plug-in and render farm programmers, concept and 2D artists, modellers, animators etc. ) to join existing projects as well as start new ones and contribute to our thriving Amiga culture with 3D Art! Even if you think you're not artistic enough, don't worry! One idea or skill you might have (e.g. being good at shell scripting or ARexx) could prove useful to a project. For example, sometimes Amiga users help projects by providing their Amigas as Render Nodes when needed. The possibilities are endless!

Where to contact us:

We have a group on Facebook as well as a team on Slack for instant messaging. IRC will also be used for Amiga access in the future.

FB: Amiga Raytracing Society
Slack: amirays.slack.com (invitation by email)
IRC: TBA

Feel free to PM us here on EAB, find us on FB if you wish to join or if you have any questions!

Best Regards,
Muadib

Nice vidz. It's been a long time since I tried ray tracing anything at all with an Amiga.

I guess for modelling and some concept stills, you can do that with Amigas.

Setting up a complex shot with moving objects and camera angles... tends to need a lot of trial and error. Which means a lot of wasted renders. Not that I'm an expert on the subject... wouldn't have a clue where to start with Lightwave, for instance.

Thank you guys, your support and appreciation mean a lot to us!

@Pat the Cat: I understand what you are saying about trial and error, not having tools like OpenGL, for example, tends to lead into more test renders than what you would do with it. And having a slow Amiga really is not one of the best experiences, compared to today's speeds.

However, I don't see why not use WinUAE for setting your Amiga environment, if you really want to get involved. Emulating an 68060 + JIT + Immediate Blitter really gives an experience of how an Amiga should really perform nowadays, if not some 5 years ago. That is, in waiting until Vamp accelerators come for our real AGA Amigas.

Supporting and sharing tips and tutorials with other Amiga users is also one of the aspects of the group. Especially for Lightwave, I've been using it since 1995, so if/when you decide to join, I'd be happy to help.

TBH my PC hardware is so sucky, I am not looking forward to seeing it emulating an Amiga.

I think my 3D talents lie elsewhere than ray tracing - for instance, learning OpenScad properly.

If/when I get some cool models for others to choreograph into stunning videos, I'll be sure to post on your group.

Grabcad is a very nice depositary if you are looking for pre-designed models.

You can link it anywhere you want ;o) I am not on FB so I cant. I did most of the modelling on 040/33 then it lied on the HDD few years till I got Pegasos to finally do a rendering under MorphOS.

Absolutely amazing when used LW on Pegasos. LW is 100% compatible and if you have RTG plugin then you can even see the renderings. These days manybe UEA is better for that, but still that was huge speed step for me and I didnt need any PC.

That's very cool man. Nice renders.
I might jump in, if time allows, but I am not sure should I start playing with Lightwave or Real 3D? What are you guys using (and what version)? Lightwave, I guess.

You're very welcome, whenever you want, just come to the group.

As for which program to use, it depends actually. I use LW 5 yet in future projects I would really like other people that use other programs to contribute. For example, there might be a scene inside the animation where a terminal screen shows some visuals, it could be done using Real3D. Or perhaps model something in Real3D or Imagine and convert it to LW. Other project coordinators that have another idea might choose Real3d for the whole process... It really is up to our imagination and each team's way of doing things.

Hey mate.
I've tried installing Lightwave yesterday on my Amiga Forever (I've picked up Amiga 4000, and created virtual HD), however I can't find correct installation of Lightwave. Or, I don't know how to install it.
I found some 2MB Lightwave 5,2 version on EAB FTP, but it's lzx format, and I have no idea how to open that on Amiga (or PC) and to install.
I also found LW 3.5, and started installing it, however it asks me for a disk 7, and I only have 6 disks.

Can you point me how to instal LW, it doesn't have to be on Amiga Forever, I can use Winuae, or whatever that works. Also do you have some links where I can download proper LW installation (adf, dds format)?
I would be happy with working 3.5 version, doesn't have to be latest Amiga version.

Thanks in advance.

Hey!
Lzx can be found on Aminet, it works then just like lha, e.g. lzx x

First download from EAB FTP this package:
ftp://ftp:any@grandis.nu/Commodore_A...e.CD.Setup.lzx

and install it. Then dl all these:
http://grandis.nu:81/eabsearch/searc...de=&limit=1000

The NFOs are just info files, the others are the release version that you will overwrite over the previous installation. Let me know how it goes!

UPDATE: Amipanel.lha is a plugin, IIRC it's an update. Just extract and copy to the Plug-Ins folder of the LW installation.
