Setting up "Input" from scratch

I would like to set up my own control keys for "Game ports", so I'm assuming that if I select "<None>" for Port 2, then all the keys will be set to defaults, so I can add my own via "Input" and select "Game Ports Panel" and then "Configuration #1", etc?

In general, I'm just wondering how the "Input" system works.

EDIT: I just figured out how to set custom keys with Remap/Test, so that's that sorted.

I am not sure whats the question..

But Game Ports selection always overrides Input panel selection (shown as "[Port x]" in Input panel). Selecting none removes all overrides.
