1)press AMIGA+E or select "Execute Command" from the Workbench Menu.
2)type NewSHELL 3)type "Assign genetics: [gamepath]" (without quotes) |

Put the "ASSIGN Genetics: Work:Games/ etc ...." into your User-Startup so you won't have to type it out every time you want to play the superb Genetic Species. Alternatively you could just do what I've done and copy the whole of Genetic Species onto a CD called Genetics. Hey presto no need to assign the game and it saves precious hard drive space.
You have to copy the CD with ASCII Level 2 or something like that so the filenames don't change. Here is a nice script which joins all the anim files into one big cdxl file and saves a lot of space!http://aminet.net/game/patch/GeneticScript.lha http://aminet.net/game/patch/GeneticScript.readme Last edited by Steve; 15 March 2008 at 09:07. |

I am using WinUAe Konrad, so I had to use the execute command. Guys, I did as you say. Maybe I typed the path wrong. But I got an error:
Invalid device name genetics assign failed return code 20 This is what I typed: |

Don't include the [ and ].
It should be something like: assign Genetics: Workbench:Gamez/Gs etc. |

It should look like this
:ASSIGN GENETICS: WORK:GAMEZ/GS (replace WORK with the name of the HD you installed it to )

Step one is to figure out exactly where it is the game is installed. Do you have a hardfile? Is the game installed to it, if so? Is it installed to a PC drive? If so and you have configured WinUAE to mount all PC drives at startup, you need to figure out what the AmigaOS/WB path of that drive is, as well as the path of the directory containing the game. For example if it is on your C: drive in a folder called GeneticSpecies, then
assign Genetics: DH0:GeneticSpecies or assign Genetics: DH1:GeneticSpecies AmigaDOS assumes the drive the game is installed on to be DHx: you just need to suss out which one WinUAE is defining it as. Add the path to that as in the examples above, then make your assign. AmigaDOS will assume from that point on that the path is a physical device (or drive). |

If you have Directory Opus installed it's a lot easier. If not look for a program called Memacs or Ed or Cygnus Ed. Load one of these up (Utilities drawer I think) then load the User-Startup from one of these editors (S Drawer) and just add the assign as though you was editing a simple text file in windows.

Retroman old chap, The name of the Dir that has the Workbench 3.1 is:
Workbench HD (used to be "gamez" for testing). This is the Windows path: C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Amiga\Workbench HD\GS I typed in: Assign Genetiecs: Workbench HD\GS Got error code again. Am I that blockheaded? |

It should be
Assign Genetics: "Workbench HD:GS" "" are required since you have a space in that drive name. or just browse through cli to the genetics folder and type Assign Genetics: "" (edited) Last edited by Burseg; 21 January 2003 at 00:10. |

That should work for ya Fred. Remember it's forward slashes in Workbench and backslashes in Windows. Add the " " because there is a space in your Hard drive name. ![]() |

I have the game unrared to the following path: C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Amiga\Workbench HD\GS PC drives are not loaded on start up, I never had trouble playing Amiga HD games by disallowing this feature. it's not in a Hardfile, just in a folder, unrared. I can try that idea you gave as an example using the path of where Genetic Species is. But AmigaDOS looks for a drive, and not so "long" a patch?? Sorry if I sound confused. |

Well, that drive has to be loaded at startup or AmigaDOS cannot locate the path. Do that, then use Steve's assign from two messages up, ASSIGN Genetics: "Workbench HD:GS"

Relax, brother. Relax. Listen, for the 342nd millionth time: No need to intergrate WinUAE into your PC, by starting up drives or such. Or installing it. Just treat it like any emu. And I am using here a PII and the latest version of WinUAE works fine. A bit slow, but fine otherwise.
