WHICH IS BEST? Speedball vs Speedball 2 (Amiga)

Welcome to the May edition of Which Is Best?
Last month proved an Amiga A500 landslide victory for the Chaos Engine player select screen music, joint second place was the CD32 and SNES versions followed by the Megadrive, then Atari ST with DOS version last.
It was a great turn out in votes and proved very interesting seeing how those votes played out.
So, here we are a month later and It's time for another addition of "Which Is Best?".
This time I place both Speedball games on the Amiga face to face, which game is the best?,...only your votes will answer that, happy voting!

All the best, Zeus

I would imagine a landslide here for 2.

Nobody ever talks about Speedball only ever speedball 2.

In fact pretty sure I have never played the first one

Speedball
+ better music but it may be personal taste
+ fast loading
+ good controls
- only vertical scrolling

Speedball 2
+ improved graphics in every way
+ player customization
+ smooth 8-way scrolling
+ better sounds
+ goal replays
+ fast loading
+ good controls

I'd rather call these:

Speedball
+ More of the arena shown on screen (no need to scroll horizontally!)

Speedball 2
- Too close view (you can't see very far, and screen must be scrolled in all directions)

That 8-way scrolling might be a technical advancement, but worse to the gameplay IMHO.

Somehow I never got into Speedball 2, but love to remember the multiplayer matches we had with Speedball 1 back then. In my memory Speedball 1 was more playable, but should try properly in these days again, if it is so

The multiplayer matches I had with mates was great too, very funny, we couldn't play for laughing too much half of the time.
Great memories, and for me the golden years of computing!

First Speedball music is superior in every way, this inspite of its ST influence and David Whittaker unable to reach into the back of the disk box for a different samples disk!

Speedball 2 by an absolute mile for me. Every aspect of it was improved in the sequel. The only thing I'd keep from the original is the Rollerball style fist tapping the leg.

I always preferred Speedball 1. The graphics in SB2 were more cartoon-like (Dan Malone, compared to Mark Coleman for SB1). Also I'm a fan of David Whittaker's music, and found the music for SB2 jarring.

It's by no means a bad game, quite the opposite. I can understand the appeal of the sequel, and it features many more gameplay options, however SB1 has a purity about it that's not diluted by gimmicks such as score multipliers and bonus stars on the wall.

SB2 - God, there's so much wrong with that game. Bought it, binned it, went back to SB1.

Music was crap. Graphics were made larger with no thought to the impact on gameplay. The overall tone was more cartoony. Because of vastly reduced visual field, tactical play became almost impossible compared to the sublime SB1.

And for SB2 they added "enhancements" such as TE mentioned, which can only be described as gimmicks.

My vote goes to Speedball because of the music. I could load the game just to hear on the music.

Speedball 2 is a good Video game, but the first speedball has something more down to the ground: with some little modification to the rules could become even a real life sport game, and i like it for that!

I always liked Speedball 2 much more than I ever liked Speedball 1.
Especially in multiplayer mode.
