[!] [a] [????]

Ok, something I've been meaning to get to the bottom of for some time... I often see tags, like above, on the names of Roms, and I was wondering if anyone knows what they all mean?

I think [e] and [j] refer to the version, european or japanese for instance. But [!]? and [x]? Reveal the mystery of the little square bracketted letters if you know them, please!
