Hm?

I buyed AF too, Version 6, 2006 Premium and 2014 Plus over the years...

I don't use the Frontend from AF, I install it, take what I need (ROM's, Workbench, Games, eg.) and deinstall it.
Then I use it just with the latest WinUAE.

With AF 2014 Plus ($30) you get (the green marked text was my reason for buying):
  • All ROM's
  • All Workbench Disks
  • a preinstalled WB 3.5 enviroment that runs smoothly out of the box (shared folders)
  • Demos
  • Games
For all other stuff u have EAB, Aminet eg.

So, other people have more expensive hobbies (or they smoking ), I guess it's a very good deal and much cheaper and faster than a real AMIGA (without a real nostalgia feeling, but it's ok).

Because "genuine" isn't genuine, it's just giving money to the vultures that picked off little bits of Commodore's corpse.

You don't even have to install AF, it can be run from the DVD, so all the files have to be accessible. You just have to know where to look.

I would say Cloanto are the pirates, who have taken something that should be freely available and made it a "crime" to copy just for their own profit.

- Nobody downloading a ROM off the internet is making any profit out of the ROM. If anything, they are preventing the scumbags at Cloanto from leeching off people any more. Good lad.
- Nobody in the team that made Kickstart is getting any money from the purchase of such ROMs from Cloanto. So this in no way supports anything but Cloanto. How is paying for those ROMs a contribution to the community? Go buy something else, I dunno, like Viddi's videogame. Heck, send 10 bucks to Stingray, Galahad, Codetapper, Toni Wilen or whoever you want who actually DO contribute to the scene.
- The only genuine ROMs I can think of are the ones firmly inserted in their sockets inside our Amigas. These are just copies.
- Cloanto is aggressive in protecting a brand that they don't even own, fucking up Amiga fan projects.

I still can't believe people defend them. They are clearly toxic to the scene and they only exist because people keep buying their vapid AF package!

I said genuine, maybe better description "Legal"

I don't really care what you or anyone thinks, I like AF, that's why I bought it, so there

Wait, gamers wanting to DL something without the license (regardless of whether you think it's OK) are calling a company "pirates" and that's supposed to be a bad thing?
Also, "they" (Cloanto) didn't make it a crime.

Really, it's a bit like saying GoG (Good Old Games) is terrible for selling old games that you can just DL from the internet for free..

Yes, anyone with google can DL for free the games that some people pay for on GoG..

But that doesn't make GoG evil.
Some people use GoG.
Some people DL the games for free...
Not many people consider GoG evil...

Considering the number of people who have "started" with AF and then moved on to more serious emulation, I'd say they have been helpful to the scene..

It's not like because Cloanto is out there, no one can find the ROMs..
They are so incredibly easy to find it's laughable...

People don't need/use/like AF.. Fine.. Great..
Others do use/like them.. That's fine too...

Really...

It IS all good.. We, as a community, just have options... That's great!!
No one is forcing anyone to buy AF..

Have a great day...

I buyed the "Download" Version of 2014, just an Installer (after installation there is an option to build an ISO).

I don't download anything because, as I said, I have more than enough computers to have all the ROMs I need. Also, I buy games, a lot. So I am not saying "go out and copy everything for free", I am saying, and I was clear, "Cloanto is detrimental and/or offers nothing to the Amiga scene". The money they take does not go in any percentage to the people who made the Kickstart. They licensed this from Hyperion who in turn bought it off a dead corpse that was passed on by another company(ies) before them.

I guess for people like you buying a record off iTunes is a praiseworthy action. Personally, I buy on Bandcamp straight from the artist. I hope you understand the difference.

For what it's worth, I think Cloanto offer a valuable service for those who appreciate them and want legal roms (who don't own an Amiga). Thanks for speaking up on behalf of those of us who agree with you and your points.

Unfortunately, it seems to just bring on toxic negativity.

I can't speak about the AF package as whole, but as far as the Kickstart ROMs and Workbench disk images go, I've always felt that Cloanto are just holding them for ransom.

If they had at least produced a Workbench "3.1.1" with known bugs and issues fixed, it wouldn't have looked so bad. Gulliver and Bloodwych have worked on these updated Workbench installations for a long time, why haven't Cloanto done the same?

It's the lack of innovation that bothers me about AF. As Akira mentioned, Cloanto only makes money on an ever unchanging set of romfiles. AF would be much more attractive if they maintained an amigaOS install which keeps improving each year. But that silly rp9 format just doesn't cut it for me. I fell for their product ages ago, but I never used their crippled roms thereafter.

On the other hand, it's all legit what they're pulling off and there's still a market for it, so who am I to blame Cloanto for anything

Correct me if I'm wrong,
but the latest AF 2014 has Workbench 45.3, which is higher than the latest Official OS 3.5 BoingBag2 Update (44.5).

I didn't say you did. Read my words again.
You did make assumptions about me though. But whatever. I'll also bid you a passive aggressive "have a good day" too.

Mine's not passive aggressive.. I really do bid you a good day.. Seriously..
It doesn't bother me at all that we disagree here... It's not a big deal..
And disagreements can lead to healthy and more creative solutions..
Honestly...

Have a good one..

Isn't that what you can buy on AmigaKit? It's a fixed WB3.1 with a few patches built in. Apparently, it's from Cloanto.
