But yes, programming your own engine is the way to go
Amos pro is fast but useless nowdays
it doesn't support AGA you are limited to 16 colors or 32 ( half brite)

I really enjoy working in 32 colours on DPaint, it's a challenge but you can achieve some very nice effects with it. It would be nice to work in AGA having said that.
