@Sensi:

Two questions:
1. Is it on this list?
2. Is it a 1-on-1 beat'em up?

You don't wanna tell me that Golden Axe isn't an beat 'em up, right?

I think the genre definitions make no sense in case of "modern" games, so diablo is not very good example.

imo the way you control a character or "mechanism" of a fight is more important than a tool with which you remove your enemies (just pixels), so I am with myself and Sensi on this

The best Amiga Beat 'em Up is Final Fight. While it's a bad port it's still enjoyable and challenging. Double Dragon 2 is also good.

The games listed in this thread are Fighting games, not Beat 'em Ups. In Beat 'em Ups you walk around and "beat them up" - them being dozens and dozens of thugs.
(I also used to call Fighting games Beat 'em Ups.)

Beat 'em Ups: http://www.gamefaqs.com/coinop/arcade/cat_160.html

Fighting games: http://www.gamefaqs.com/coinop/arcade/cat_57.html

The best fighting game for Amiga imo is Panza Kickboxing.

1. No
2. No

Its just an example, in which category would you put it?

I'd say hack'n'slash and beat'em up is equally high up in the genre hiearchy (uhm, spelling) of action games. You could flip things around and say beat'em up is a subgenre of hack'n'slash.

And no, I wouldn't say Golden Axe is a beat'em up either (that one is pure scrolling hack'n'slash).

@Sensi: the 2nd one...

1. A 1on1 beat'em up (Mortal Kombat)
- you both start from a standing still position, always in the same place, facing the enemy
- timer counts the end of the round

2. scrolling everybody-rushes-on-the-player beat'em up (Golden Axe)
- you go forth and beat everybody in an scrolling environment

3. other beat'em ups (Moonstone)
- no timer
- no rounds
- neither you or your enemy start from a standing still position, the same place, facing eachother

It doesn't take an Einstein to guess which type of beat'em ups covers this poll, so I don't understand the argueing...

So it is beat em up
I think we all are discussing little details. Lets call these games (fighting, slashing, hacking, beating, kicking, banging ...) "games where creatures hurt other creatures"

@John4p, definitions dont work here, my definiton could be different to Shoonay definiton and what then? Find definition how to make definitions?

Of course!
And in Life and Death you can slash your patients tummy to bleed itself to death, so it's... slash&bleed out!

Hmmm, I kinda agree with those definitions on Wiki (though I don't think objective definitions of genres exists, when it comes to detailing). It makes sense (beat'EM up, implying THEM, as in shoot'EM up).

Fighting games, beat'em ups and hack'n'slash would fit under the close combat banner. Seperating Fighting Games and Beat'em ups while putting Hack'n'slash as a general sub-genre doesn't make sense, imo. A genre should tell a person what you'll spend most of the time doing in a game. In Moonstone it's hacking and slashing. In Double Dragon it's beating people up, street fighting style. In Mortal Kombat, it's one on one fighting. So let's make a new main-genre, called Close Combat.

@TCD: That's not clearly defined: "Hack and slash or hack and slay can refer to either a subgenre of action game, or a type of gameplay."

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hack_and_slash

@SensibleFan: Of course these definitions did evolve over time. No one needs to accept them.

Nope, it isn't a *pure* classic one, neither a 1on1, neither a scrolling one, it's main genre is very different, only it's sub-game's sub-genre is something that I would call a simple beating the heck out of nameless monsters...

The only right definition of beat em up is "Beat em up is beat em up and stfu if you dont wanna be punched out." Thats it.

Monkey Island is one of the best non-pure hack n slash game in my opinion
