Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Plus - Classic platforming MOD updated

Quote:
It was a brilliant game for it's time featuring great retro graphics, multiple levels, environmental hazards, different character choices, platforming blasting action, power ups and multiplayer over LAN. Yet for anyone wishing to play it today with more than just the original gameplay, Violet_CLM has released Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Plus version 5.0; which gives the original much needed new features and improvements.

Second one was cool, for me it was great platform game since Commander Keen. PC didn't have much own platforms games, GEX,Rayman,Lomax were console ports in that days.

Maybe it was just me, but after playing platformers on the Speccy and Amiga I found IBM-PC gaming to be clunky and just... well, horrid. Mind you, I thought that Super Mario World (NES) controlled like crap too.

Platformers were never the PC's strong suit, possibly since the parts of the EGA/VGA hardware that enable scrolling across a large playfield and slightly accelerated graphics operations were poorly documented and didn't work in the standard 256-color mode (you have to be in "Mode X" for them to be useful,) so most DOS games simply used the VGA as a static, unaccelerated framebuffer - which of course meant expending a fair bit of CPU horsepower (to say nothing of bus bandwidth, at ISA's measly 4.77MHz) on stuff that game consoles got for free and various home computers could do almost as easily. That said, there were some good ones - Jazz Jackrabbit, Jill of the Jungle (kinda balky and more of a puzzle game than an action platformer, but still pretty dang good,) Inner Worlds...

... Halloween Harry, Pitfall, Captain Claw, Gods**, Commander Keen 4, Blackthorne, Abe's Odyssey, etc. etc. Of course platforming was often integrated into broader genres of games, including adventure games (Little Big Adventure being an excellent example).

My platform gaming needs were very decently met on the PC. But to be honest I was never really looking for such games to play on it, they were far more fun to play on consoles or handhelds.

** if you want to post that you don't like this game, better go do that in any of the other hundred threads about it

My favourite games on the PC were not platformers but shooters and strategy
