Smile Hi from Tasmania, Australia

Hi everybody.

I used to be quite an Avid user of my Amiga computers, and have owned the following:
  • A500 (KS 1.3, 512K trapdoor, 4Mb Fast RAM), external DD Floppy.
  • A600 (no HD, 100% stock)
  • A1200HD/40 (DKB 1202, 4Mb Fast RAM, 16MHz 68882), later upgraded 200Mb drive
  • A2000
  • A4000/040
  • CD32

Sadly, silly me sold or gave away all these machines many years ago now (the last one was in I think 2008, the A4K)

Now I want to show the kids how computers SHOULD be, and how they used to be, introduce them to the joys that the Amiga brought me.

Thankfully, Amiga Forever, combined with other resources on the internet, such as this one, have made it possible.

I'm not really talking about games, as for the most part, I used my amigas for things like Deluxe Paint, Personal Paint, Photogenics, Imagine, ImageFX, and many other joys.

But sadly, I have forgotten so very much, I can remember some of the basics, but coming back to Dpaint and Ppaint after all these years, to name a few, has shocked me as to how little I can remember how to do.

Some other programs, I never got beyond the very basics back in the day, such as OctaMED and Deluxe Music.

So if anyone could help with pointing me in the direction of any tutorials online (doesn't matter what for, as long as it's for the Amiga version), so we can get back up to speed, that would be very much appreciated.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to what I should get, as well as emulators to use and settings for within the emulators, that would be very much appreciated too. I'm emulating on a Windows PC (AMD Phenom II 955, 8Gb RAM, 512Mb nVidia 9600GT, etc), obviously I have WinUAE 3.0, I also have FS-USE and Amiga Forever.

Seeing the kids enjoying programs such as Photogenics and Deluxe Music is fantastic, and really makes me sad that things turned out the way they have... And it really reminds me how much I miss the days when computers were fun...

Indeed.....missing the fun is all too true. Just look at all the old Amiga mags with all the exciting add-on hardware you could get then! For the PC today....I wouldn't look twice

Have fun with the re-learning!

Welcome along! They do always say that once you've caught the Amiga bug, you can never shake it

I have lots of relatives in Tasmania, mostly in Hobart and Devonport. It's not really somewhere usually associated with Amiga users!

Welcome!

As for emulators, I had Amithlon working on an old 1GHz PC several years ago, the performance putting my 40MHz A1200 to shame. Unfortunately that PC has failed (mobo) and I haven't been able to get Amithlon working on any other PC boxes or laptops I've bought ever since (unlike my A1200, still going strong for decades, and getting used on a daily basis for emails and abit of web browsing). I don't think Amithlon is supported any more (I haven't looked into it for at least a couple of years) but from memory had a strong user-base with a lot of discussion on various supported/compatible PC configurations.

Good luck with your emulating and I'll probably do the same when my kids get abit older (although it might be hard to drag them away from their Leap Pads and iPads when they get older, too!)

edit: Oh look, another Sydney user (@Voyager)

First of all, thank you to everyone for the warm welcome! IT's so good to see so many people still have an interest in the Amiga. My partner never knew of the Amiga, she has now been brought up to speed, seen commodores world premier of the Amiga, seen what it could do, and is totally dumbfounded that Commodore made such a mess of it all. She agrees that it was vastly better then the PC and the Mac, and thinks that those in charge of commodore were a little

Hahaha too true. I never really lost the Amiga bug, I only stopped using my A4000 because the monitor I was using with it stopped working (it was a NEC multi-sync that was able to display 640x480 without the terrible flickering that usually went hand-in-hand unless you had a graphics card or flicker fixer, but it could also display the 15khz modes no trouble) and I couldn't afford to replace it, also I needed a new mouse, but didn't know anywhere I could get one. And yes, I regret selling that A4K.

Hmm, Amithlon, I had forgot about that, I remember reading a bit about that years ago, will have to see what google can find for me, thanks!

It has been a welcome surprise to find so many Aussies here! I used to be in Melbourne, I only moved to Tassie nearly 2 years ago.

Hello from Melbourne.

I always regret not selling my humble C-64 and buying an Amiga instead, but hopefully that will change around April this year.

Ahh yes, how did I forget about AROS? Probably because last time I tried it out, it was, well, lets just say, not as impressive. Looks like I'll have to give it another look! Thanks!

Thank you for that, I just lost a large chunk of the day playing around with that. VERY interesting, and certainly seems to be in the spirit of the Amiga OS.

Hi, you will find most australians who do adore amigas live in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane.

I had a look at the online auctions to get an amiga 500 and I managed to buy one in the UK with the US Keyboard layout so that means I basically got the same aus pal machine one with the us keyboard layout.

I will do a review soon once I get a hold of it and demonstrate to you guys what the capabilities are on the amiga 500.

I've now got myself a little A600, which currently does not work (doesn't boot, Power light comes on, but drive doesn't click and display remains black), but I'll be getting it repaired and I'll probably get a Vampire 2 to go with it.

Sounds like the common reset circuit issue. Usually this is due to dead capacitors so make sure you get them all replaced as soon as you can - they could be leaking and slowly destroying the mainboard!

I have contacted a person to get it repaired, and will be sending it to them asap, they should get it next week for repair. I'll also ask for them to check for any other faults while they have it, and do any preventative repairs necessary.
