Any plans to make a sound card emulation?

Hi Toni,

do you plan - in the near or far future - to make a sound card emulation like Prelude or (Picasso IV) Concierto?

best regards

I dont really see the point of those cards, as for AHI compatible software there already is a UAE AHI device.

The only board i could think of that might worthwhile to do this is the Toccata for which there at least is software that specifically requires it and its library.

For use with 68k OS this is true. But PPC OSs can't use this UAE extensions.

Yes, "plan" as in "someday.."..

Just like with RTG hardware emulation, _single_ sound card must be chosen that:

a) has full hardware documentation
b) has driver for all Amiga and Amiga-like and Unix-like operating systems.
c) preferably DMA capable.

Does that always have to be the case? Does the emulated PPC not have access to these extensions?

I can see that uae.audio source code (provided with WinUAE) is in 68k ASM .

Could an OS4.1 developer re-work the source into PPC ASM or C, add any OS4 AHI changes (presumably the existing one is for OS3.x AHI) and then re-compile/assemble a PPC UAE.audio device so it would work as a native PPC driver in WinUAE?

It would be really cool to have Toccata soundcard emulation:

It is one of the oldest, and most widely supported Amiga sound cards.
NetBSD, supports it.
It is not open hardware, but it is really a simple design, all based around the Analog Devices AD1848KP chip (which is pretty well documented).

Toccata looks simple enough and does not appear to be timing sensitive due to use of FIFO buffer chips and netbsd driver source is always nice to have.

No. All UAE hooks only work if it is executed by UAE m68k emulator. (See other similar topics)

Quick implementation already done, I guess 1.1.2015 is good date for first beta

Toccata is really simple. Few hours to get it mostly working, some more hours to actually make it usable. So far only OS3 AHI tested.

That sounds great Toni.

Will it also emulate the onboard mixer for mixing the Amiga's native audio/CD with that of the Toccata?

Why? You "automatically" get both sound sources at the same time in emulation.

For the folks out there using musicsoftware it could be neat to have that possibility.

What about something like moving the aux1/2 slider in the Toccata prefs tool is changing the emulator volume for amiga/cd audio?

Perhaps. If it is "standard" way to connect Paula and CD audio cables when using Toccata.

EDIT: AD1848 documentation says all aux inputs are muted after reset. Not that good idea if paula and cd audio is muted when Toccata is emulated but not used..

I looked at the user manual. You can save ToccataControl prefs in envarc: so that should not a real problem. But if you mean paula would be silent if you boot into game that is not what we want.

Can you add an option to toggle toccata/uae mixing anyway?
So the user has the option to do what is possible on the real Amiga.
Just plug the included cable into the card and the computer.

Edit: The manual says also that the AUX2 is a low level input.

Paula and CD audio volume can already be changed from inside emulation.
http://aminet.net/package/misc/emu/uaemixer

If Toccata prefs have a public and documented programming interface, a slider for Toccata volume could be added.
