The most important unanswered question is: Who removed Personal Paint 7.1 from Aminet and why?

Having it "someday" anywhere else for download isn`t the answer.

I already answered that several posts back, read the whole thread.

@ Amigakit, ignore the trolls. You know who.

I really do not see the problem. The owner of PPaint decided to remove it, so he did, why are people constantly moaning about it.

Dear Jools,

We have recently acquired Personal Paint (PPaint) programme from Cloanto Italia SRL.

We are making a new version of PPaint available for Classic Amiga users shortly from our servers.

I would request that you remove all older PPaint files from your website and FTP site as soon as possible.

Please confirm when this has been done.

Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
I run an Aminet mirror... idiots.

really stupid move.

thanks.

I have better things to do than to deal with requests like this - especially when it's out of my control (when my mirror updates the files will be deleted if they have been deleted from aminet).

I am not a fan of removal of something that was free to try and push people to buy an updated version - which is how it looks to me.

Good to see new commercial developments for Amiga in 2014, whether software or hardware, and if the quality is good, I want or need it, I'll buy it!

It was up to date, but old/removed files were deleted after a delay due to bugs in the aminet mirror system / permissions (which caused the entire mirror to be removed and restored before).

i still disagree with the move to remove all existing copies. a real shame.

I really dont see what the problem is. Is PPaint holding Aminet together. Are you telling us Aminet is finished?

Obviously Im going over the top. This how crazy it all is.

?

I'm disagreeing with the move to remove the freely available version. You are welcome to disagree with my opinion.

How have I said anything else regarding Aminet ? eh.

This is why Im saying its over the top. If you read the other threads you posted in, you would see that the general tone is that Aminet has been destroyed.

Crazy.

That's because it was handled badly. removing something when there is no version available elsewhere. I point you to my last reply on amiga.org

(I'm not going to have the same discussion with you over there and here)

@BuZz

It is available from the AMIStore website for download:

Quote:
The older 7.1c archive will be available to download from the official PPaint website:

http://ppaint.amistore.net

This domain is still in the process of propogating with DNS servers around the world so it wont be available everywhere until during the next 24-48 hours

a few points:

Instead of removing it from aminet it should have been replaced with a file pointing to the new location - and done after it was available for download.

Even better - the one on aminet should have been kept but a note added pointing to your site - what if your site goes down ? What happens in the future when this website disappears suddenly because you have lost interest or some other reason (I have seen many Amiga websites come and go) - the Aminet system was decent - it would have made sense to continue using it.

Right now the download link gives a WSOD.. Not DNS related.

@BuZz

There are future plans that you are not privy to. The old PPaint has been available for a decade so day or two down time on the archive is not that

Amistore.net is not going anywhere soon. After spending 25 years with the Amiga, we are not either.

I am very surprised that the positive news of PPaint being updated for AmigaOS 3 has not been focussed on here instead of an old archive being unavailable for 48 hours.

How would any future plans affect the older freely available version, unless those plans were to restrict it / force users to purchase a newer release? Maybe people would be less suspicious of your motives if you were more open about it?

You are a business - you may well decide at some point to change direction. You do not have the history of aminet as a reliable distributed software archive available from many international mirrors.

Don't be surprised. You handled it badly. Maybe you should have waited ? The file is still not downloadable from your site btw.

My opinion is that it's their property so they can do whatever they want with it. They can upload it for free, they can charge for it or hide it in their locker if they want because it belongs to them.

@ptyerman:
I had read that but wasn`t sure it is a fact. However, there is still the question why they removed PPaint 7.1 from aminet. If they just make it available for free at another palce it makes no sense to me to remove it from aminet. The best place to have is aminet. I don`t want to troll, I really want to know the answer because I can`t anderstand the decision.

It was really a bad decision as you can see. All the forums I visit the people really dislike it.

I`m not completely against removing an archive from aminet but there must be a very good reason. Maybe some people should think about what aminet is and for what it stands.
