btw- the snes locks up if you knock it too, its not just the megadrive... maybe a bit more stable, but not by much!

PS- it's a bit stupid if you add games like cannon fodder n stuff on here, cos they've been ported to everything, including the gameboy!! (we all know that the snes ports were prolly best anyways!)

Not a very hard question or vote.
Anyone who says the PCEngine was the best console
go to the front of the class.

The later games on PCE were STUNNING and showed up the MD & SNES
as the under achieving games machines they were. (see SAPHIRE etc)
The almost total lack of western developers was a major plus. The ones that
did appear were as equal if not better.
The other 2 consoles did have some great games but in overall no where near the amounts available for the PCE.
Yup, most of the BEST games were on CDs, and it's near impossible to find any on the WWW (prove me wrong someone, please ) got about 60/70 and wouldn't part with 'em.

Ya know, I've seen a Mega-Drive fall from a height of about 3 meters while turned on, hit the ground hard, and it DID NOT freeze.

Here in Brazil I can say for sure that the Mega-Drive sold more than the SNES. I thought that was also true on USA.

"CastlaVania 4 & X (SNES) looked better than CastleVania Blood lines (Genesis) "
Yeah, but Bloodlines plays a WHOLE LOT BETTER than 4 or X. The action is a lot faster, more tense and manic.

"Super Turrican 1 & 2 Vs Mega Turrican "
Again, Mega Turrican plays much better than both Super Turrican games.

"Super Contra III Vs Contra Hard Corps "
Once more... this is even more absurd, Contra Hard Corps it's incredibly better than Super Contra III (I love Super Contra III, but it can't even close of Hard Corps).

"Super Ghouls & Ghosts completely kills Genesis Ghouls & Ghosts."
Well, ok, here I agree

And btw, I DOUBT, a LOT that the SNES could do something like Gunstar Heroes, Contra Hard Corps or Vectorman. Those games are just too FAST for the poor SNES to handle. Geez, I doubt the SNES could do even a Sonic a-like game!

gunstar heroes is one of the best games I've ever played, I don't care if the Snes could handle it or not, if it was on the Jaguar I'd have bought it soley for that! I voted for the megadrive simply because I found it offered me more at the time. I've always had a fondness of it.

I used to own a SNES and a megadrive but I still own the megadrive (well about 15 of them), I let the SNES slip many years ago which was a shame, I loved a LOT of games on it, just nowhere near the equivalent on the megadrive.

Sales mean nothing when the question is which do you prefer.

Oh and by the way.. on the Mega CD...

Heart Of The Alien was good

I doubt the SNES couldn't handle the games you mentioned. If you play Sparkster on SNES you'll notice that's it's as fast as the Genesis version & Sonic (If not faster)
Also If you play these equevelant SNES games, you'll find that they're quite superior on the basic SNES hardware compared to the Genesis basic hardware.
Just a few examples:

Alien 3
Arabian Knights - Sabaku no Seirei Ou (J)
Bahamoot Lagoon
Black Thorne
CastleVania - Vampire's Kiss
Contra III - The Alien Wars
Cybernator
Cutthroat Island
Darius Twin
Darius Force
Hagane
Jim Powers - The Lost Dimension 3D
Judge Dredd (U)
Metal Warriors
Musya
Ninja Warriors Again
Pocky & Rocky
Pocky & Rocky 2
Realm
Rendering Ranger R2 (J)
Sparkster
Spriggan Powered
Sunset Riders (U)
Super Shadow of the Beast
Super SWIV
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles IV - Turtles in Time
Wolf Child
X-Men Mutant Apocalypse
X-Kaliber 2097 (U)

You cant forget Earthworm Jim now! MUCH nicer on the SNES

and
Coolspot,
Doom (even when the Megadrive had that 32X!),
FIFA (even tho I hate it!)
Mortal Kombat (megadrive was faster, and blood- but seriously, more buttons + superior graphics and sound)

Another 2 to compare, probably unfairly, but I guess it demonstrates the differences in graphics--- Shadowrun... they are different games on each console, but the differences show through easily.

PCE... I'd say would have been better if it was more commercial as in more games, people owning them, and was better than the snes + md in speeds and graphics for a while, but did the effects keep up with the snes with all these cartridge chips?

Was earthworm Jim the same game on both consoles? I always thought they were actually different games on Megadrive and Snes...

Aladdin and Alien 3 where both different as well IIRC...

I didn't get, most of those games you listed weren't even released on Mega-Drive? What am I supposed to compare?

Sunset Riders was a DIFFERENT game on the Mega-Drive. The mega-drive could handle that SNES game pretty well.

For Jim Power.. can't remember many differences between the versions.
TMNT IV on SNES indeed is a little better, but not all that much

Fifa plays like shit on SNES. It's the first time I hear someone saying that Fifa was better on Snes. ISSD was better on SNES, but not Fifa.
Mortal Kombat PLAYED better. It looked worse for sure, but it played a whole lot better. And with the 6 button pad, you play it just like the arcade game (While with 3 button, you can still play it pretty well.. Hell, you can play the Amiga version with 1 button pretty well...)

I don't want to start a war between SNES and Mega-Drive owners.. I think this doesn't make much of sense.... I am just arguing what you call "facts"

Show me something like Gunstar Heroes on SNES.....
At the same time.. show me something like Pilotwings on Mega-Drive ...

PCEngine never had any extra chips to enhance the capabilities of the host machines, such as MD (Virtua Racing) and SNES (Starfox). Apart from extra Mbits of memory in the Super/Arcade CDRom Interface Card and some later games (Street Fighter 2 CE was 20Mbit) any extra graphical FX were done with the bare hardware.
Sprite Expansion/Rotation, Morphing, Multilayered Parallax Scrolling (only 1 plane on PCE), Polygons, Pixel Scrolling, Screen Expansion, all evident on a machine that if you examine the tech specs was a enhanced C64.
When R-TYPE appeared the PCE outsold the NES in Japan, NECs big mistake was not releasing it in US or Europe at THIS time and when they did eventually release it the 16bit era was in full swing, with crappy looking hardware and the software catalogue consisting of bad Jap port they cut their own throats.
Interestingly the MD wasn't as great a success in Japan as you might think as all the gamers/developers moved to SNES when that was released. It was rushed out in US/EU to beat off NES/SNES and it worked.
Gamers who bought into the PCEngine while everyone else was fighting over which was the best console MD or SNES sat in the background with a BIG cheshire cat grin.

If I am not mistaken, the PCE had problem surviving in the USA because Hudson couldn't release their games there, becasue of a contract with Nintendo or something like that.

And Hudson has made the best games on the console for sure.

I also am pretty sure that the PCE sold more than the Mega-Drive in Japan. I think that the only place where the Mega-Drive had a much bigger number of units sold was in the USA.

Well.. here in Brazil too

Sega mega drive, in my opinion was the best, because of the amount of games ported to it, and it can still hold its own today for the sheer game.

But hey, thats my opinion.

Yeah Shatterhand, I read an article some years ago that basically said Nintendo had most of the software producers in Japan by the short and curleys.
Because of their virtual monopoly of the home console business via the NES
their licensing terms were very strict, denying software producers the right to port their games over to other companies hardware, losing them potential revenue.
This caused a great deal of animosity towards Nintendo as they made bi££ions
in profits (they also manufactured the carts as well), killing the proverbial goose.
What good is a machine without good games???
Also another reason why the software companies embraced the PSX as they did, Sonys licensing terms were more lax and gave companies a greater share of the profits etc.
Which is why I don't think many softcos give a toss about Nintendos recent
difficulties. I'm not sure why Hudson (co-developers of the PCE with NEC) or the other PCE games producers were reluctant to release most of their catalogue in US other than the above statement, although there were some other underhanded tricks, such as SEGA paying the producers of GOLDEN AXE for PCE to write a shit conversion, making the MD version/console appear far superior (it was really shit, for no apparent reason, the PCE could have handled it quite easily).

as far as which is best... its not really a closable discussion. they all have thier strong points. imo it would be ideal to own all 3, snes, md and pce or at least emulate them.

i'm a md collector myself, i did own an snes which i was also starting to collect for but unfortunately it was lost to an ex

all 3 have games that are awesome, but have more that are shit.

who cares anyway, the amiga had the best games of that era
