Smile Play Expo: Manchester’s Eventcity 11-12 October 2014!

Play Expo : Manchester’s Eventcity 11-12 October 2014
Following in the high octane tracks of last year’s hugely successful event, the nation’s army of gamers, puzzle pros and arcade gurus will descend on Manchester’s EventCity 11-12 October as the most action packed and utterly immersive gaming expo bursts into multi-player life.

Officially launched today and set to be the largest multi-sensory video gaming event in the North of England, Play Expo is a high tech-meets-retro-extravaganza set across five fantastic zones. The two day event will also pit amateur gamers against the best in the country as the Classic Gaming Championship finals reach their nail biting conclusion in a duel to the death on the main stage. Final heats will take place on Saturday with the Grand Final scheduled for Sunday, where the UK's greatest retro gamer will be crowned.

Meanwhile, visitors can delve deep into the world of their favourite TV and film franchises, take the driving seat with exclusive sneak previews or be amongst the first in the country to sit at the controls of some of the UK’s hottest under the radar indie games titles.

“The all-encompassing Play Expo is unlike any other gaming event on the planet,” said Andy Brown, show co-organiser. “Whether reliving childhood favourites with the Expo’s unique haul of arcade collectables, getting up close and personal with authentic film props or taking to the main stage in a movie-worthy crafted costume, Play Expo is totally unique.

“Now in our fifth year, we have developed five huge zones which we know hardcore gamers and enthusiastic amateurs alike will love and we have some truly outstanding concepts. Exclusive hardware, game launches, cult actors and characters from the best of TV and film franchises – think Doctor Who and Star Wars and then take it to a whole new level.”

Play Expo: Events 2014
Gamers can expect to immerse themselves in a clutch of no holds barred experiences at the show which was nominated for an MCV award earlier this year.

screen.play : screen.play is a mash up of film and TV memorabilia, actors, props and games from the biggest and best shows and motion pictures to make the cross over to gaming and vice versa. This is a groundbreaking new addition for 2014 that will bring the country’s first true crossover of film and TV with gaming, allowing fans to play the game and then get up close and personal with the big screen version in real life.

re.play : re.play at Play Expo is the biggest retro gaming event in Europe, offering both purists and casuals access to the widest collection of video game history ever seen in the UK. It brings together consoles and computers, arcade games and pinball machines with over 100 of each set to free play. Renew a childhood acquaintance with cult classics including Pacman, Outrun, Track & Field, Street Fighter 2, Gauntlet, Star Wars, Operation Wolf, Bubble Bobble and Donkey Kong.

Special Guest:
We are also really pleased to be able to announce that our first confirmed special guest for Play Expo 2014 is industry legend Mel Croucher. Mel is the creator of a number of award winning games including Pimania and the multimedia extravaganza Deus Ex Machina. Deus Ex Machina 2 was the subject of a successful Kickstarter campaign last year and we are very excited to try it out at Play Expo. Mel also has also released a book charting the birth of the games industry and Deus Ex Machina’s part in it. Mel announced his appearance at Play Expo to his Facebook followers in his own inimitable style…

“I’ve agreed to attend PlayExpo, the most extensive celebration of video games history ever seen in the UK, to be held in Manchester UK on 11th and 12th October. My status is “special guest”, which translates as “old fart”, and I’ll be giving talks and signing stuff, as well as showing old and new games, blessing children and healing lepers.”

cos.play : A hot ticket for the most dedicated and creative gamers, anime and movie fans. cos.play will see super fans don costumes and props worthy of a Hollywood wardrobe department in tribute to their favourite characters from the world of video games, comics and films. cos.play will feature a range of costume competitions, parades and skits for pros and beginners, groups and singles alike.

pro.play : Lock and load your controller with a host of free to enter prize tournaments across both retro and modern systems. Battle it out on games such as FIFA, Street Fighter, Mario Kart, Minecraft, Halo and many more or compete to become the king or queen retro gamer of the UK in the Classic Gaming Championships. In pro.play gamers can also show their mettle with pay-to-enter tournaments for cash prizes.

now.play : Buckle up for a thrilling ride through cutting edge, not-yet-released games and hardware from the industry’s biggest names. Last year saw visitors trying the phenomenally successful Dark Souls II and Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag games ahead of their official launch as well as taking the Playstation 4 console for a spin six weeks before its release. This year’s line up promises to be no less exciting with major new titles and technology to be debuted. With previous events supported by gaming giants such as Sony, Namco, Nintendo and Ubisoft, Play branded events are used as the proving ground for hotly anticipated new games months before they go on general sale.

Exclusive Talk:

We are also delighted to be welcoming the amazing CINEMAWARE to Play Expo now.play zone this year. Cinemaware are the company behind a whole host of classic Amiga games that are being updated for modern systems. Following on from the release of Rocket Ranger, Kings of Chicago, and Defender of the Crown, Cinemaware are now hard at work on remastering their wonderful WWI fighter pilot hit WINGS.

As well as displaying Wings, Cinemaware will also being showing a mystery game for the first time in the UK and also taking part in a talk/Q&A where they will discuss the past, present and future of one of the best loved 16 bit brands. Sven from Cinemaware said…

“Cinemaware is looking forward to joining the Play Expo 2014. We still have a great and supportive British fanbase and we are really excited to meet them all in Manchester! Please visit our booth and meet us for a a chat and personal demonstration of our new and classic games.“

Even More!
There is even more going on at this event than ever before! Play Expo 2014 is not to be missed!

Its that time of year when the next Expo is due to arrive and rumours of the next event can now be confirmed.

After the huge success of Ocean and Gremlin talks at previous events, Andy Brown has arranged a very exclusive presentation and chat with the very seldom seen Cinemaware team. They will be showing us their new updates to Wings - which is due very soon - as well as a 'mystery game' (which we can only pray is DOTC 3) at this event.

I can also confirm there are talks scheduled for both days, with ZX stalwart Mel Croucher booked to appear.

I will also post further news on here as soon as I get it.

Play Expo confirms first fourteen indie studios for October Expo

Gang Beasts, Wulverblade, TerraTech and many more games announced
Manchester, UK, 12th August 2014

Replay Events have confirmed the first fourteen indie studios that will be exhibiting at their Manchester based video games event, Play Expo this coming October. The number represents a considerable increase in developers exhibiting at their annual gaming show.

Andy Brown, Director at Replay Events said “We are overwhelmed by the support the indie game community has shown our expo this year. The indie zone was a very popular feature at our Play Blackpool show in May as well as at Play Expo last year so we wanted to build on that momentum for this October’s show which is shaping up to be our best yet!”

Play Expo is now in its fifth year and has established itself as a firm favourite amongst gamers. The event saw close to 16,000 attendees in 2013 and the organisers have increased the show space to accommodate up to 25,000 gaming fans this year. As well as an indie zone, the expo features esports, current gen gaming, a retro zone, cosplay, industry speakers and special guests.

Fully Illustrated owner Michael Heald who is exhibiting at the show said “Wulverblade is a HD 2D side scrolling beat-em-up that aims to revive this lost genre and bring the classic arcade gameplay to the next generation on Xbox One - we’re proud to say that Wulverblade was selected as one of the first 25 ID@Xbox titles to appear on the new system! We’re hoping to be able to bring both a taster of the campaign itself as well as a ‘survive as long as you can’ arena mode to Play Expo and we can’t wait to get people’s feedback!”

James Woodrow, Utopian World of Sandwiches Director added “We came to Play Expo in 2012 and had a great time playing Chompies with everyone. This year it's going to be even bigger and better, with even more of our fellow indies joining in the fun. We're really looking forward to showing everyone in Manchester our nine-player sequel Chompy Chomp Chomp Party on the Wii U. We want to get the whole crowd involved!”

The organisers are offering indies special low rates for space and power on the main show floor and there are a variety of packages available to suit small studios as well as individual developers. Anyone interested in exhibiting should email Replay Events directly - exhibit@playexpo.net.

The studios and games confirmed to date are:-

Boneloaf - Gang Beasts
Fully Illustrated - Wulverblade
Lamplight Studios - A Pixel Story
Mechabit - Kaiju Panic
Payload Studios - TerraTech
Hidden Armada - Mutiny!
Utopian World of Sandwiches – Chompy Chomp Chomp Party
Leda Entertainment - Bopscotch
Application Systems - Ghost Control
Application Systems - Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet
Cinemaware - Wings: Remastered Edition
Dojo Arcade - Creature Battle Lab
Tall Studios - Shoot 'Em Up Kit
ProjectorGames - Dungeon Crawler
ProjectorGames - Fortress Craft: Evolved
Strategic Designs - Starters Orders

Replay Events have already announced GameSeek as their retail partner, have revealed several industry speakers including Charles Cecil MBE and have also released details of a number of high profile film and TV guests including Star Wars, Dr Who and Red Dwarf actors.

Play Expo returns to EventCity (next to the Trafford Centre) in Manchester on 11/12 October 2014.

More headlines from the Play Expo scene:

Iron Throne from Game of Thrones at Play Expo
We will have the Iron Throne from the smash HBO TV series Game of Thrones at Play Expo and we will be running professional photo shoots for anyone who would like their picture taken on the seat of kings. Why not come in cosplay as your favourite GoT character and have your photo taken on the actual Iron Throne? Professional photo opportunities will be available at various times over the weekend and can include a 6×9 glossy print for £5.

Team17 confirmed for Play Expo
We are extremely pleased to confirm that one of our favourite publishers, Team17, will be exhibiting at Play Expo this October. Team17 will be showing off their latest game Flockers at the show and will also be bringing some of their indie studio chums along, including Italic Pig, Mouldy Toof Studios, Self Made Miracle and Dlala Studios. The gang will also be running a tournament of the game Overruled! over the weekend in our pro.play zone with some cool prizes to dish out and will no doubt have a few other surprises up their sleeves.

Team 17 - Flockers

Screen.play goes BACK IN TIME!
The Delorean Time Machine from Back to the Future is one of the most iconic movie vehicles of all time and we are giving you the opportunity to have your photograph taken sitting inside Doc Brown’s greatest invention! The car on show comes straight from the original Hollywood movie sets as it was used by Universal Studios Hollywood as the 25th Anniversary Delorean Time Machine and was documented on the Blu-ray release of the Back to The Future Trilogy. It has also been seen on Keith Lemon’s Lemonaid TV show and the Britain’s Got Talent 2013 Semi-Finals.

Feel free to take your own photos of the car, or get up close and personal inside the Delorean with a professional photoshoot, which will be printed off straight away and presented in a photo folder. The cost of a professional photo is £5 per person.

Spectrum vs C64 Debate Panel
It’s a debate that’s been raging for over three decades – which is better, the Spectrum or the Commodore 64? To mark the 32nd birthday of both these marvellous micros, Play Expo will endeavour to answer this most thorny of questions with the help of four men who should know.

Advocating for the Spectrum we have John Gibson, whose credits include Zzoom and Stonkers, and Ste Pickford, one half of the Pickford brothers, the pair behind such Speccy gems as Feud and Amaurote.

Making the case for Commdore will be Andy Walker, whose Taskset software house gave us Super Pipeline and Jammin’. He’s joined by Jeff Minter, the hairy coder behind Llamasoft and such hits as Revenge of the Mutant Camels and Sheep in Space.

Come and quiz the experts, vote for your favourite machine and finally settle those long-running playground spats. Chaired by Paul Drury from Retro Gamer magazine and ably assisted by Martyn Carroll, Retro Gamer’s launch editor.

Arcade Legends Konami Return!
Konami, the company behind gaming titles such as Pro Evolution Soccer, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania and Silent Hill (and Green Beret - Ed), have confirmed their attendance at this year’s Play Expo.

Konami will be giving fans the opportunity to play Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 which has already received high praise from the press and public alike. The game recently won the title of ‘Best Sports Game’ at Gamescom 2014. Attendees are invited to play and experience the game for themselves which will be available in the now.play zone. The Konami staff will be at hand to answer any questions about the game as well as to provide details of the new PES League season where entrants will have the chance to win exciting prizes simply by just playing. Head down to the now.play zone to find out what is up for grabs. Fans are also invited to participate in structured playoffs between each other which will take place in the pro.play tournament area. Not only will fans have the opportunity to win official Konami and PES brand merchandise, they also have the chance to win a ‘money can’t buy’ UCL Dream Ticket which guarantees the winner as seat at the 32-man PES UCL Final.

That’s not all as Konami will also be unveiling the first ever PES League University Championship, open exclusively to UK university students nationwide. There is also a unique opportunity for university students to become PES League Ambassadors, where they will be able to organise PES League tournaments on campus, updating results directly on the official PES League website, giving their fellow students the chance to become PES League University Champions and to win amazing Konami prizes.

We will also have a number of other playable Konami titles on next-gen consoles – details to be confirmed shortly.

We would really appreciate it if you could help promote this for us by sharing our Facebook post, retweeting the tweet or linking to the website article.

They are included below for your convenience.
