I've already offered to help with that as well.

Actually, hosting itself isn't the problem. The server is running on 129.241.210.43. The problem is only the domain name.

The site should be accessible to you if you add the following your hosts file (just google for how to do it):
Code:
129.241.210.43 back2roots.org www.back2roots.org files1.back2roots.org
I tried pointing another domain name at the server, but unfortunately the site is coded to redirect to back2roots.org if the site is accessed with another host.

I thought the guy who ran bttr went by the handle something hippy actually hippy2000. He told me he wrote the tool that scans adf's and dms's or something scandeep i think it was..for use with managing the site. Id be surprised if he had given up on his miggy. Last time i talked to him bttr had a big hardware failure and he was restoring as much as he could (many years ago now)

Edit: After a quick google Ralf 'hippie2000' Steines is his name

Yes, it was to Ralf I gave the offer to help. The problem, as I understood it, was that the domain was sponsored by someone else for the last 10 years. However, now it was not renewed for some reason, and they (back2roots founders) need to get in touch with the former owner of the domain name to get it transferred to them. This was in may, and I don't know anything more...

[PS: I have asked for an update on how it is going, and mentioned again the offer to help ]

Maybe setting up a new adress similar to the old would be the faster way.

Why not merging the contents of the BTTR server with the EAB File Server? The file server contents could be classified between freeware and abandonware, for example, BTTR/public-domain as freeware and the rest, abandonware (with the current file server directory layout, is hard to distinct one between the two). The BTTR home page could coexist as well, surely the founders of BTTR will want this.

Because they apparently don't want help. It's over three months now and except for confirming the problem and what has to be done nothing happened.

Even with the hosts file change (which is a cool method I didn't know about, thank you!) I get this message. Seems IO is blocked from a lower level also:

I'd like to second Supamax's question: would you consider sharing the mirror you made of BTTR with people? Even better, upload it to Magix's FTP so everybody here can continue to have access to it...

(This bit TCD revealed about the BTTR team not wanting help is upsetting me to no end. How stupid can you go when you can't even realise after 6 months or more that you just don't manage by yourself! They'd rather have it remain offline as long as it's all ON THEIR OWN! Like that is the important part.
Wake up morons, focus on the "OFFLINE" part, that's what matters here... )
