Most nostalgic demo?

I'm not sure where to post this. I was going to put it in the nostalgia section but it says "retrogamers", so...

If you had one demo to choose from based on nostalgia value, which would you choose? It doesn't have to be the most technically or graphically excellent demo, just one that makes you feel nostalgic whenever you think about it.

For me, it'd have to be the Crionics Megademo from 1990. It was the first demo I ran on my A500 soon after buying it and I was absolutely blown away by the cool effects and catchy music (which sounded great on my stereo; I had upgraded from a C64 so I was used to SID music on my 1702 monitor.) The Madonna animation was really really cool too.

Unfortunately I had an NTSC system so I was missing out on the bottom portion of the screen so I couldn't even see the complete selection menu. I remember having to slowly move the mouse around hoping that I'd successfully load the right demo. I was amazed years later when I could switch into PAL and see parts of demos that I'd never seen before - the Madonna animation actually had text at the bottom of the screen! And I could finally hear the music as it was meant to be heard because it was slightly sped up in NTSC.

Jesus on E's

It was technically amazing when it was released, and whenever someone asks me to name an Amiga Demo it's always the first to pop into my head

It also takes me back to the days where I'd wake up power up the beast and erm.. that'd be it until bedtime

I just loaded that demo yesterday. The music seems to go on forever so I ended up quitting. I remember people talking about it though, how it was so cool and required 2 disks drives (a rarity amongst Amiga demos). I don't think I had 2 drives at the time so I was never able to try it. The music isn't my cup of tea but it's high quality so I can see why people praised it. It's kind of like State of the Art, which is a graphically better demo IMHO.

For me it would be DMob music disk 2. Its nothing special technically or even musically, but it was my first ever demo and so will always be a bit special. If anyone has the adf of this, could you up it for me please? Ive asked before I know and someone did upload a DMS version but I couldnt figure out how to get it running so gave up.

For me it is

ENIGMA by Phenomena.

The tune was excellent and my local independant computer store used to run instore to show of the amiga`s capabilities.

Holy shit, believe or not, EXACTLY the two demos I would have named. I remember it when the cube in Enigma started to spin, wow, I could have watched it endlessly. Or that raytraced animation - all on one disc. It was breathtaking. The RSI Megademo was the first demo I ever ran on UAE. It was one of the first versions of UAE and I was totally blown by seeing actual Amiga output on my PC monitor.

for me very simple, the first thing I ever saw LIVE running on an A500 was in December 1987, Tech Tech megademo by SODAN. I was flabbergasted seeing all those fast vector graphics, tons of colours, stereo music and samples and multiple scrolling thingies.

Still love it, though it looks "simple" by todays' standards

Jesus on E's, This looks so dull now and Zzzzzz emmm where was I? Ahh yes this was the first ever demo I saw on someone’s A500, then I got diskcopy of it for my A600 but had no second drive so was swapping the 2 disks over all the time (Emm no wonder my eject button went. The stupid things you do when you’re younger.)

I was also very impressed (and still am) with Technological Death / Mad Elks

Mayday Resistance was also ok.

Since then I have seen a lot of other cool demos thanks to EAB.

Can anybody explain to me what was/is so brill about it?

And from Spaceballs, I only like State of the Art and 9 Fingers. I was never impressed by any other of their prods.

anyone could have made Jesus on E's with RSI demomaker.... i think the name made it stand out from the crowd... i actually prefered the Digital Concerts by Flash Productions (better sample quality, but lacking gfx)

That's right - I wasn't into demos when I bought my Amiga, and this one was the first because it spread well also among freaks who were only playing games.
But that rose my interest, and the demos I still love watching today are

Enigma - Phenomena
many demos from Sanity (music by Jester!)
Hardwired - Silents/Crionics
nearly all MELONSTRATIONS!!

I hated Techno and Techno-styled demos, so I never liked Spaceballs demos or others mentioned above like Technological Death of Jesus on E's.

not actually true.. jesus on e's loads from disk as needed (anims and mods) the mods share many samples also. I like this production and enjoy the music quite a lot. sure the coding isnt amazing, but its entertaining for me.

I think the thing I hate the most about Jesus on Es is the music. I really find it cack!!

I agree though, the part I like the best, is the beginning, with the loading pic and the cool Mike Oldfield tune! I thought I was in for a blast! But after that, I start snoring at the minute

I guess i agree on this. Jesus on e's is no where near the top
of my all time favourite demos. Its still good, andi enjoy it, but there is far better productions out there. And why has noone listed any andomeda stuff? those were really beautiful polished demos.. along with stuff from TEK.

I think my favourite "non stop" music mix would be "TEF giga mix"

The first Demo I saw on a beloved A1000 was Sodans Tech-Tech .. Nice because of the Kraftwerk samples.

The Demo what really kicks my butt was - Megademo II by Northstar & FLT .. it was the first Demo that ran on my own Amiga. I still like it because it's my personal nostalgia ..

Other demos that were really cool in my oppinion:

Uli (United Lamers Inc.) Megademo containing Total Stagnation (hello Anarchy )
Scoopex - Mental Hangover (played 1000th of times)
RSI Megademo
and of course every Animators Production ..

My all time favourite demo has to be Desert Dreams by Kefrens
The stretchy bouncy box routine was amazing and I still dont know how its done.



However, for pure Nostalgia. it has to be the raytraced Juggler Demo.. This was the VERY first thing I saw running on an Amiga in Harrods in London (Id gone there because it was one of the few shops that sold Amstrad PCW games which was the only computer I had before an Amiga)

After seeing that demo I had to have an Amiga but it took me about a year before I saved enough to buy one.

Yes, the Amiga Juggler!

My family had just bought a C64 and I thought that was great. The Amiga (1000) seemed like some sort of supercomputer to me when I saw that in 1986.

The Walker demo

The empirial walker demo (from The Empire Strikes Back) where it walks past an Amiga2000. I remember lots of non-computer people stopping to watch this one which was shown continuously at some department stores.
Still, despite people showing this kind of interest they all probably went and brought IBM clones

* Yes, I know technically these were both animations, but usually these were more impressive visually then most demos. I can admire peoples programming skills but the best demos for me were the ones that made use of the Amigas fast 2D display (zooming and fast effects) and smooth scrolling instead of those 'my Doom engine is better than yours' demos. Not to mention the : 1024 dots on the screen, 2048 dots, 4096 dots - Who cares? Its just a rotating ball. Have it morph into different shapes while rotating - thats more impressive to watch.

For me it was the 2 Budbrain megademos. In the early days demos were mainly found and europe and not widely spread here in Canada until later on.

Really don´t know who programmed it and don´t know in which year it originated but it really was Amiga at its best: In essence Base is a music demo split up in four or five sections consisting of different music mods. The graphics consist of those typical Copper chip tricks. The mod which features sampled voices singing ´Move your body, rock your body´really rocked. The music is typical end Eighties/beginning Nineties Techno with sound effects that sounded dated two years later. But for me it was the best thing at the time (1991).

About Jesus On Es: If you have seen the demo for the first time in 1993 or later, you´ll be bored with it. But at the time it was released, autumn 1992, it really blew me away because it featured samples and tunes which could also be heard on radio. It features samples taken from The Shamen´s ´Ebeneezer Goode´ (best Techno song of ´92 IMHO) which is for me THE reason to make it my favourite music/demo. Oh, and the animation taken from 2Unlimited´s videoclip ´Magic Friends´ also adds to the demo´s status.
If you want to know how house music sounded like in 1992, load Jesus On Es for a stroll down memory lane...

Autumn 1992 is 4 or 6 months short of 1993

If you want to know how house music sounded like in 1992, load Jesus On Es for a stroll down memory lane...

I really don't think music in that period sounded that bad! really, I find this demo to be horrible!

Even though I never liked Amiga Demos as much as I like the ST ones , I can distinguish the following:

-Odyssey (a brilliant space odyssey)
-Coma
-Jesus on E's
-Enigma

The early single loaders bring a tear to my eye
Like Subway from rebels (cool sample tune & good wow factor for the time),
Wild Copper demos (I luv u!),
flight of fantasy ?(Cant remember directly i think it was by fairlight? & had very familiar cool music though)
SAE single load demos (eg fractal mountains )
Anarchy Phantasmagoria?

The first demo I saw on my Amiga was "TechTech" from Magician42 & SODAN. "Boing-peng-bumm-tschack-peng!"

It had a lot of rip-offs (gfx from Defender of the Crown)...

Does anyone know the names of the songs from which all the samples were ripped? I'd like to listen to the complete songs.

I think its the muzak that makes ray of hope 2 and also the funky distorted magnetic fields effect which i think was a first for this in this demo
