My Morphos EMac!

Hi all, having realized (now that I have finished this project) that no one in my house is the least bit interested I realized I needed to speak to some like-minded individuals on EAB!

This is my Morphos 3.1 Emac. Took me a couple of weeks to finish it (not least as I had to replace all the capacitors!) A good few days to get my head round the OS but it was definitely worth it! Its a 1.25GHZ with 2GB Ram (only 1.5MB useable in Morphos).

It runs Wipeout 2097 unbelievably fast! as it does with Quake and Doom. Plus Mplayer plays hd video really well. I have managed to get E-UAE running adf files but haven't worked out how to install Whdload yet. (one for another week:-)) It does run Snes, Nes, Megadrive, Pc engine and master system emulators as well! If any of you were considering doing similar I'd say go for it. It's pretty simple to set up and boots in seconds!

Be happy to but won't manage it this week :-) Loading the opp system, is easy! Like really easy. Just burn the iso you get from here http://www.morphos-team.net/morphos-3.1.iso pop it in your emac restart it and press and hold the 'C' key immediately after the welcome chime. Installing to hard drive just follow the menus!

Remember it will format all data on the drive.

The configuration bit for your software is the hard bit but depends on what you want to use it for!

I should point out that Morphos isn't free though the download above allows you to use it for 30 mins before it pops up a nag screen and slows to a non workable speed. I'm registering this week now I have it all working! If you just want to see what it looks like you can boot from CD and not install it :-)

How much can you get one of these Macs for, any old PPC model which can run Morphos?

I'd like to try AmigaOS 4 or Morphos, but the Amiga X1000 is insanely expensive and the notebook they made an announcement of was obviously just a weird lie, so that leaves Morphos on a cheap Mac as the only alternative.

You can only run it on the 1.25GHZ and 1.42GHZ models though the 1.42GHZ uses theRadeon 9600 video card (integrated into the motherboard) which isn't supported for 3d hardware acceleration. The 1.25GHZ uses Radeon 9200 so it is fully supported. You should be able to pick one up for 50 max though postage is a killer as they weigh 23KG!!!!!

Go here for a full list of supported hardware http://www.morphos-team.net/hardware

Mac mini PPC works too if you dont have the room for a CRT :-)

Good plan, I'm considering doing the same now. As I think it would be more useful in the long term :-) I'll wait a bit though as we don't wan to be bidding against each other. Happy to play with this one for now :-)

Yeah, Mac mini is really nice. Definitely isn't taking too much space and is pretty powerful for Amigaish use

If you can find 1.5GHz (64M vmem) version, it's really better than other models which have only 32M graphics memory, if you want to have more eye candy in the system and don't want to compromize anything... at least with modern resolutions.

I've written couple of reviews etc, if anyone is interested: http://jpv.wmhost.com/morphos/
