Uses for an old A1200?

I use my A1200, 4mb ram card, 2GB CF drive and monitor for learning AMOS. (Or will do when the bits I'm waiting for arrive...)

I've only recently dug the old girl out of storage and I'm in the middle of tarting her up for the reason listed above. This led me to wonder what other practical uses the old hardware might have in these days of Smartphone apps and stuff?

What do you do with yours?

Watching scene demo's. Creating bitmap art. Games. Tinkering with trackers and listening to mod tunes. Running mac/speccy/msx games.

Amiga is still the best for pixel editing. I have Pagestream for Windows and Amiga. I think the Amiga version is superior.

The Delfina provides an excellent way to strip MP3 headers. Thats useful.

It's awesome that the old machines still have everyday, practical uses.

I just checked my email, bank balance and ebay listings on my HTC smartphone. I checked to see if anyone had replied to this thread on the phone as well, half an hour ago, when I was in the supermarket. But still, I'll pay more for my accelerator when I track one down, than I paid for my (this) Linux laptop and phone combined.

Am I nuts? My wife certainly thinks so

If you are nuts, you have lots of company. I would argue no, not nuts. Your Amiga gear will always be worth money.

Your "smart" phone will be worth .50 cents in recycled lithium in two years.

The wives of classic car enthusiasts probably think the same

Also, it's getting to the stage where even my toaster can emulate the A500...but it still isn't the same.

I know a guy who's a member of this forum, whose main computer is an A1200 with 68030. He doesn't even have a peecee, because he hates the things.

To the married guys:

When your wife complains about spending money on Amiga hardware, just remind her of how much she spends on make up, bags and shoes

Carefull, without make up, bags and shoes, some women can look very, very plain indeed. Make up does some good things to women. Dont deny them the opportunity to make themselves look 3x better that whats really underneath. Its you thats gotta look at her the most.

There are a number of threads going around on the question of "What to do with an Amiga". Some dudes have them set up full time, in use, but I found the majority (myself included) have them shelved away, only bringing them out once every 6 months or so to fire them up for a couple of hours, before putting them away again.

Do you have a perminant spot on a desk for the Amiga and its bolt on accessories? She takes up a bit of room. Do you want to have her out in the sunlight receiving UV and O2 which ultimately will make her go yellow?

I've yet to bring the old bag home and set her up on the desk, but when I do I won't be using her for anything practical. To me it would just be a roundabout way of doing things compared to using the PC or Mac, though it could be cool to do these things like letter-writing and printing on the Amiga. For me it's mostly about nostalgia so I just like to tinker a little bit and reminisce.

Yea sure....

I made it myself from 3/4" MDF. It was very much trial and error to get the measurements correct. I wanted a machine that looked nice and wouldn't look out of place in my living room.

I took out the motherboard of my A1200 and mounted it onto a piece of 1/2" MDF that slots down the inside right had side of the machine.

Connected to the motherboard is....

1 x Scan doubler / Flicker fixer
2 x ps2 keyboard adapters
1 x IDE Compact Flash Card (2GB) - With WHDLoad + Games ;-)
1 x Elbox 4/8MB Fast Ram Card
1 x Floppy Terminator for fast booting
1 x Joystick Splitter - So you can use your own joypad if you want
1 x ps2 Mouse adapter with Optical Mouse
1 x ps2 mini keyboard
1 x ipac style keyboard encoder (home made)
1 x A500 PSU 60 watt type

The glass top is toughened 6mm BS safety glass.
There are two 120mm case fans, one on either side of the machine on 5v rail.
The black wood laminate material is similar to 'fablon' but much thicker.
The legs I purchased from a local DIY store.

Thats it really. I havn't got any more pictures at the moment (sorry)

No. why?

The question is what you can do, not what you can't do.

Bought an 030 accelerator with 68 megs of RAM from Amigakit, got a 4 gig CFCard, a nice screen for it, a CD-ROM and a PCMCIA ethernet adaptor.

Makes a superb machine for listening to mods, playing old games, using apps like DPaint, Imagine, Lightwave etc. I just play with stuff from Aminet and old magazine cover CDs.

On-line it also makes a great machine for IRC, I leave IRC open on it while I work on my main PC, also the web isn't too bad in IBrowse if you ignore CSS etc. It's still a useable machine.

I also read old diskmags and just mess around with software/apps I enjoyed as a kid, very nostalgic, upgrade and tweak Workbench, try hacks etc.

My A1200 lives on its own desk right next to a window, but I always leave it covered with a thick tea-towel when not using it.
