Street fighter 2 HD Remix on PS3/Xbox360 is a good example of a remake done well. Firstly the graphical updates but secondly rebalancing of all the characters. Not exactly new features per se but a nice update...why couldn't they have just done that with dizzy? higher resolution, but same animation frames etc

Remaking it using the original graphics (or original graphic style), but then adding new features. For example having much more variation in the pitch textures to add muddy patches, dry patches, divets and such like. Putting the referee & linesmen in if it didn't have them original. Why not add the offside rule? Why not add team customisation, or online multiplayer.

That's where the REAL fun is for me in a remake. I know it's probably not particularly creative, but for a programmer/artist/musician it's incredibly freeing if you used to love the game and people would likely enjoy it.

Sadly the first port of call is to modernise it by using 2.5d, for example.
I have to agree, all tho some remakes in 2.5d are actually quite good like Street Fighter IV, Mortal Kombat (2011), Donkey Kong Country Returns & New Super Mario Bros..

Curiously it was actually the original Amiga artist who did the graphics for this one...

The really liked the MI and MI2 SE editions on the xbox they were done well. And some of the updated idea games in 2.5d are awesome. Shadow complex is out of this world.

i have to chime in and say i also thought it was a bit shit.

it just doesn't 'get it'. it feels like those crappy remakes that people were churning out on games factory some years back.

yes it looks nice, and, i guess it sounds nice, but it plays badly.

some years ago i worked on a remake of the original dizzy, my reasons were that the first game was never made in the 16-bit style, yet all subsequent dizzy games actually rehash features from the original game, therefore i could salvage pretty much all the artwork needed from the 16-bit games in the series to re-create the original.

it was coming out quite well, but in the end once i'd got over the hurdles of putting the game together it became quite tiresome and I lost interest.

It happens, though, sadly

I wonder if I'm not gauging the general public's opinion very well with my rant about 2.5d and such-like. I certainly enjoyed Shadow Complex (mentioned above) but when it comes to remakes of things I hold dear, I love to see the original art style used where possible. Much of a nostalgia thing I suppose.

I guess that's just my sorry opinion, and 'Joe iPhone-user' actually doesn't care, which is cool.

I tried this Dizzy POTY remake today on my JXD S601. The best thing is that you can use hardware buttons as default. It's easier than on Amiga - you can not jump and roll to your death. I like background graphics but not main hero and grim reaper. First seconds of music are from Amiga.
