Cinemaware returns

I must be on an old mailing list. I got this in my inbox today

An emulated Amiga version of DofTC on iPhone? Who's Amiga emulator are they using? Any copyright ROMS in use?
Greetings, Cinemaware® fans!

It's with tremendous excitement that we share the following news with you: after a far-too-long absence from the world of gaming, Cinemaware is back! That's right - the company behind some of your favorite games has returned, and we're already kicking things into high gear with:

The launch of a brand-new Cinemaware.com website!

This is a place we are designing and building for you, our fans, to gather and interact with other Cinemaware diehards, talk about our games, share your favorite moments and, more importantly, interact directly with us as we move head with the planning of our future titles! Yes, we're hard at work on new releases for the web and mobile platforms, so expect to hear more about those in the coming months. In the meantime, we'll be launching a series of web "featurettes" - browser-based games inspired by the action sequences from our classic titles. Cinemaware.com is also where you'll be able to access our catalog of classic games, playable free-of-charge in emulators, and Cinemaware merchandise from the CinemaWEAR store. Come see it all at www.cinemaware.com and tell us what you'd like to see us develop and have available on the new site!

Also, we now have a Facebook dedicated profile! Please visit us and join at:

For the latest updates, follow us on Twitter at:

Defender of the Crown® Emulated Edition for iOS!

The game that started it all is back! Our original 1986 hit returns on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch thanks to our partnership with iAmigaTM emulator developer manomioTM. This 100% accurate emulation of the timeless strategy-adventure set in a war-torn medieval England is now available in the App Store for $2.99. Experience the sights, sounds and classic gameplay that turned Cinemaware into a leader in gaming, all over again! You can download the game here:

The game has already garnered several reviews and coverage, including:

iGame Of The Week: Defender Of The Crown

TUAW Daily iPhone App: Defender of the Crown

touchArcade: A Hands-On Preview of Amiga Classic 'Defender of the Crown' for iOS

Leo Laporte picked Defender of the Crown - Emulated Edition for iOS as his game of the week on iPad Today's latest episode! See his remarks just about one hour into the show:

We'd like to thank you for being loyal Cinemaware fans, and we hope that you're as excited about our comeback as we are. Stop by the site (you'll need to re-register, but we promise it's quick!) and let us know what you think in the new forums. We'll see you there!

The Cinemaware Team

Great news!!!
Funny how things come full circle..

Hey, multiplayer Defender of the Crown might be a fun little facebook type of game too.
(And I'm not even on facebook.. ;-)

Glad the old games are seeing new life.. And the old companies..
I hope Jim Sachs is involved still..

Personally, I think it would have been a good new if they were doing for Android.

True, as I don't own any Apple products (made in the last 15 years), I am happy for them, from a far.. ;-)

Android and/or web would be nice...

Jim Sachs is very much alive. Today he's the owner and developer of a popular series of screen savers called "Serene Screen". He also has a blog on http://castleonthecheap.blogspot.com/ on building his dream home, pretty interesting stuff.

Wow! I hope the Cinemaware crew is working on It Came From The Desert 1 & 2 right now and even sweeter would be if they released a third! And for Android.

Somehow I missed Lords of the Rising Sun during my Amiga years. Just saw the title on their site and checked it out on Youtube and it looks pretty awesome.

Didn't they "return" already a few years ago, doing revamped versions of their old games?

Yes, and the remakes very pretty bad (the PC ones anyway, I bought two of them).

The GBA version of Wings seems alright but I haven't played that one much either.

Cinemaware released the old versions of their games for free some years ago. Really nice. You only had to register for that mailing list.

there's a project i've been slightly involved in. the aim was to embed winuae in a single exe with whdload and the slave (was called caveman)
I think Epic was doing this. Me i just changed my slave a little bit so the texts displayed during loading were readable and waited for lmb to change screen.

of course i was not paid for this. just was awarded free games (well that was the deal)

now I doubt about the legality of selling this (gnu copyleft licences, etc...), and I'm pretty sure there's whdload in this iphone version!

Yeah, sources are on Aminet

I think Epic was doing this.
Amiga Inc. used it to sell some Cinemaware/Vulcan titles as 'standalone' executables for Windows via their dreaded web shop. No idea if it was indeed their project, or if they reused somebody else's code.

Selling is absolutely no problem, the GPL allowes selling stuff. You just have to provide source codes for the GPL stuff.

and I'm pretty sure there's whdload in this iphone version!
I doubt that, that would be way too easy to prove and get them into major trouble.

not that easy to detect as AFAIR they created harddiskfile with encryption for each standalone game. not difficult to embed whdload in it.

whdload unregistered of course, else it's piracy.

anyway, ipad is very bad at emulating computers. you need to remap controls, and joystick on touch screen is terrible.
at least Imame4all proposes wii support through bluetooth.

on the other hand i bought the latest pinball dreams hd for ipad and it's very good (it's not emulation)
