HotL is more of a jum&run than a RPG, and easily one of the weirdest games I've ever played. Quite true to the novels, anyway.

There were symbols that one had to match up for spells. I stopped trying to figure out the combinations.

I liked Chaos Strikes Back a bit more. Maybe it was darker and had unusual classes.

Black Crypt is a good clone that I started as well.

Knightmare is a pretty good little game along with Hired Guns. Both run on pretty much on any Amiga. I also have to put a vote down for Perihelion as that game is pretty epic.

Are there any sci-fi RPG's for the miggy? I don't care much for D&D these days.

If you later get even more into RPG and you have a (sorry for off-topic) Super Nintendo console, then you should get Chrono Trigger. It's one of the best games ever made, in my opinion. The music, the graphics, the backgrounds in the landscapes, the dialogs, the challenges, the mood, they way of "playing it your own way"... everything!

I was partial to the Ultima games, the Gold Box D&D games (Pools of Radiance, etc) and the Bard's Tale games...

I tried getting into the Dungeon Master games, but for some reason, I never really got that enamoured with them...

Bard's Tale is deliberately hard. Ultima is much more beginner friendly. It also has a nice story.
