Installing AmigaOS 3.5 or 3.9 without CD reader

Hi !

There are ?none? standard classic Amigas provided with a CD reader !?

The official AmigaOS 3.5 (and 3.9) from Amiga Inc. and Haage Computers Gmbh preseumes that you have a reader connected. Why ?
Too big files to be placed on floppies ?

Is there a way to install without CD reader ? Not practical, need to copy 100 Mb onto floppies ?

Install on a HD (or CF) "off line" under WinUAE ?
Any suggestions or comments ?

Nice gaming and computing

Hi Perran,

That's the best way to do it.

If you have a 44-pin IDE HD, you will require a 2½-inch to 3½-inch hard drive adapter to connect it to your PC's IDE controller. You can use a CF card as well, but you will require the appropriate adaptor(s) as well.

You can mount the drive in WinUAE provided it has not been assigned a drive letter by Windows.

You will need to set the WinUAE configuration exactly to match the Amiga machine that the drive is being prepared for (with the exception of the CD-ROM drive), then proceed exactly as you would if you were preparing the hard drive in your real Amiga.

Good luck!

Edit: Of course, Thomas Rapp's guide to installing OS3.9 on WinUAE should give you all the information you need. Thanks, Steve!

If you've got a PCMCIA CF card reader you can use this method: http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=516901&postcount=4

Hi Perran, I had a bit of a struggle with this myself a couple of months ago. I found the best way was to mount my hard drive in winUAE (I have a compactflash) and install it in there, then transfer the drive back into my amiga once it was done.

Good luck!

Continuing with CDROM

Tried to follow the Thomas Rapp procedure (refered above). It was OK to install 3.9 on a PC HD. My separate Amiga HDs was not detected in WinUAE (there is a lot of discussions round that problem here).
So, in my A3000, there is an IDE HD connected to a Zorro Buddah board. I instralled 3.1 on that one using floppies (in the Amiga). I connected an IDE CDROM to the 44 pin extra connector on the Buddah (the standard PC 40 pin connector is used for the internal HD). Of course I used a 44p -> 40p converter and separate power to the CDROM.
I could not see any signs of life in the CDROM, and no traces of its existence in the WB3.1 commands (Info, showconfig etc).

(The A3000 has got new fresh Kick3.1 PROMs).

My latest idea was to connect a SCSI_1 CDROM unit (actually a Plextor, has done a lot of work in my lab). I used the internal 50p connector on the motherboard. I used some different addresses (/= 0).
I thought this should be autodetected because the machine is designed as it is.

But the CDROM "masked out" the HD on the IDE bus, so the Amiga did not autoboot (I got the Amiga logo screen with the hand and the floppy). I inserted the WB3.1 floppy, and Amiga booted correctly.

Should I have a "blank" SCSI HD, and install WB3.1 onto it, and then try to install 3.5 and then 3.9 on it, using the CDROM ?

WinUAE seems to be practical, but my HDs are not deteected.
Any good idea or recommendation ?

Thanks from Perran

i usually just use the 'assign', works great.
also, there's 'virtualcd' on aminet.

oh, and immediately after starting the installer, I move the old workbench (3.1) to a subdir (then choose new install).
AmigaOS doesn't seem to mind it!

you need a working WB then you need to install a CD fileing system before you can use your CD drive, either that be a virtual CD or a real CD drive

a quick search on aminet gives us AmiCDROM for a cd filesystem which should give u a start

no, he can transfer the .iso or .lha with ftp or samba from pc.

iirc, the only thing to keep in mind is that boingbags require some large media files as copyprotection.

been able to transfer stuff from the pc to amiga is not the same as been able to read a cd image or disk

yep boingbags need 2 avi`s and an mp3 or something like that but if you do a search on here about serial and boingbag you will find out how to unpack them

Maybe not, but if your Amiga does have one, it sure is useful.
