workbench 3.1 & a1200

hello all,

okay some questions on WB3.1 ...

ive been away from the amiga since about 1994 - the A1200 was new (ish) then, commodore had just died and i bought an 486 to play doom!

anyway i have a 1200 with a 4gb cf hard drive, 4mb ram card and an ADF cf pcmcia card...

but

OS3.1 is looking very old and bland (it did in 1994) can it be updated to nice icons, 3d or whatever?
most things i try to install from aminet fail - mui missing this that or the other, missings scripts, library 38+ , insert DH0 in to any drive, failed to open, bad argument, installer missing.....etc etc

what should i install on a clean os 3.1 to make current as can be?

thanks all

Grab another CF card they're as cheap as chips these days then you can swap them over whenever you fancy a change!

Classic Workbench is awesome, its ideal for bringing your A1200 up to date.

Once you learn how classicwb works you can then install a fresh 3.1 and pimp it the way you want. Its what I did, but I am a bit sad Took me ages and a PM to fitzsteve to work out newicons is whats needed to show whdload game icons in full colour :S

I like Jimbo's idea of building my own system using the best from each package and personalising it myself, but both ClassicWB and AmigaSYS are excellent pre-installed Workbench setups and work fine as they are. If you do end up wanting to build your own system, I recommend partitioning your drive into three or four parts, and make each partition bootable. Install ClassicWB, AmigaSYS, Workbench 3.1 and (optionally) 3.9 on a different partition each, then you can just select which one to boot from and you can mix and match without having to swap any drives.

I think if you want to do the hard work yourself, after installing a fresh 3.1 Workbench these are the next things you should get to start enhancing your Workbench:

Workbench 2000: http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/WorkBench2000
WB2000 update: http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/WB2000_Update

FText: http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/FText
BlazeWCP: http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/Blazewcp

Good luck!

Yes that will come in handy.. I appreciate the love that ClassicWB gets but when trying to understand how everything fits together amongst the OS and its addons/tweaks (curiosity, education, historical intrigue) there's nothing quite like rolling your own Was hoping to see a list like that myself, thanks.

I'm just getting back into the scene after a 19 year hiatus and haven't got a clue how to operate an Amiga lol. I've just fished out three old 1200's that I bought years ago and never got around to playing with and plan on a bit of retro action this weekend. I'd love to update one of the 1200's to see what's possible with it.
