OK, this question has come up here and elsewhere...,

So, assuming they wanted to do an FPGA based accelerator..

Q1: Is a 68020 core (Natami has one or elsewhere?) feasible in a realistic timeframe?

Now, you might say, why a 68020 for an A1200?
(Of course, 68030 or higher is better, but)..

Q2: How fast a 68020 could you make, including any speed increases you could get from the FPGA core and memory access tweaks?

Would you be able to create a 68020 that runs at 28Mhz (or more) and possibly feels like it runs even faster than that?
Maybe still not enough but...

Q3: How much RAM could you give it?

Could you release a fast 68020 softcore based accelerator that came with 128M or more of RAM?

Now, THAT might be interesting as most of the existing (on e-bait) accelerators come with 4M - 16M RAM.

Would there be enough benefit to an Amiga 1200 with a fast 68020 and GOBs of RAM, that it might make 68030 (or higher) owner who has 4-16M want to upgrade???

Just thinking..

Q4: (Still thinking) Could you design it to be upgradable?
So, as prices drop (or if people pay more), you can add a faster FPGA now or when available to get the extreme speed Amiga users?

no i would not want to upgrade my 030 blizzard unless it was faster
and a fpu would be desirable 040 built in fpu as the 060

new fpga 020 1200 card would have to be cheaper than a recon 1200 card
to be viable

i think people have said it before in this thread fpga 060 would be hard
todo if not imposible id like to be proven wrong

an if a 1200 card ever is made that good we all would come down the chimley wearing stockins singing ymca

So, there's not really much that you can't do or would work better with more memory than your Blizzard provides?

Hmm..

i would give my 1200 more use other than runing whdload and playing
about with amisys if it had avi video playback and youtube
suport in a browser i dont think 128 meg would help me personaly

maybe the answer to the best selling a1200 hardware would be
a 8 meg memory card with 4 gig compact flash for whdload games

with this liquid cooled quad core ati hd 5770 pc im usin now
its amazing that my amiga is still there ready when i hit the power switch

Depends what "realistic" means. 2 years? 5 years? If you want it within 1-year then it depends who is paying for the development. Realistically probably not not.

Which FPGA? We had this discussion. The bigger & faster the FPGA the more expensive it would be. You really have to choose a price and then try and fit a core to that FPGA but seeing as how no core exists right now, no-one knows.

How many pins do you have on the FPGA? Maximum would probably be the entire high memory area (anything over 16Mbytes and less than 4GBytes) but I do not know what the AmigaOS limitations are.

I don't think so, not at an acceptable price. But no-one knows what FPGA resources you need so which FPGA to use hence no-one knows the price.

Not for me (and the vast majority?) I mean on an Amiga, anything over 128Mbytes is really just showing off The Amiga programs I've used do not benefit from much over 32Mbytes. Ok so you may find one or two but not many. Certainly non the average Amiga user will want to use.

Depends how much flexibility is done with the PCB (more flexibility = higher price). As for replacing the FPGA. Probably not.

I don't think that is practical. I think the CD32 joypad was a terrible design and to re-make it with all the plastic toolings etc. wouldn't be sensible.

However AmigaKit could make a low price (good quality) adapter cable (with the 9-pin D connector moulded without wings so as to also fit A600) which allow the use of modern console pads in CD32 or A1200 would be good. Something like this from Paul Willingham :

yes it would be cool to have a flash mem kickstart chip so my miggi boots
first time not too much to ask is it?

So, it sounds like it's possible that there isn't really a 1200 specific project that's feasible.
What most people would want, cheap RAM/Accelerators, can't be cheap.
On the high end, you might be able to do a 68060 setup, but the small market would mean they'd have to charge quite a bit for it...

And, with products like the FPGA Arcade and possibly Natami coming out, it also makes the high end market a tough sell..

I like the FPGA Arcade's chances as it has a larger market... Home Arcade machine owners also will be considering those, as well as other hobbyests can use the FPGA Arcade, so it's not limited to an Amiga audience, which I think will help.

Of course, it will be nice to be surprised on this one.. ;-)

The most expensive thing for A1200 expansions is the trapdoor expansion connector. If AmigaKit is planning on Clockport expansions they won't have to worry about expensive parts, just getting the drivers and software support for the expansion and making the product desirable enough to justify the inevitable high cost.

In a shop? You can't. They were produced to order by Paul Willingham. That is why I suggested that AmigaKit produce some. If you google for Paul and CD32 you'll maybe find his email address and ask him to make you one.
