I have to cheat a bit - technically this is an arcade game I've played, but it's simply a NES clone meant to take quarters.

Still, didn't mean that my one-life romp of Mike Tyson's Punchout is less impressive... at least I like to think so. :P

Only game I could ever complete on 1 quarter (well, 3 quarters for 1 play) was Dragon's Lair.
..
Shut up, I like that game!!!!!

I mean it! Stop teasing or I'm going to tell mom!!!!

I like Dragon's Lair!!!!

(Yes, I have issues I'm working through on this one. Many people hate this game. I have to accept that..) ;-)

desiv

Of course, if I do the math, at 3 quarters a play, in order to learn HOW to beat DL, it took ... er.. um.. carry the 5.. divide by pi.. square root times the circumference... a LOT of money.. ;-(

I dunno about Oregon but around here Dragon's Lair (arcade, not NES) is considered a true classic. Groundbreaking even - I'm surprised people bash on it. Hell, they've done DVD and Blu-ray remakes even! XD

Cool thread that I've just noticed

Off the top of my head:
... Double Dragon
... Midnight Resistance
... Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (normal, championship).
... Shinobi
... Shock Troopers
... Willow
... U.N. Squadron

Other games that I came very close with 1 credit:
... Crime Fighters
... Strider (stage 5)
... Psycho-Nics Oscar (stage 4)
... Vendetta

There's probably a few more but need to think

I could easily clock Double Dragon on 1 credit back in the day.

Simply by using the elbow move all the way, but that bridge jump was always tricky!

There is no 'continue' on the last Misson (5) of Shinobi ;-)

Exactly; if you loose all your lives on the 5th mission that's it... start again from scratch.

Apologies then if my recollection from 29 years ago or so is off! Ha

On real arcades, I think I only 1cc'ed fighting games.. Street Fighter 2 CE a gazillion of times, X-Men vs Street Fighter a gazillion of times, MK1, MK2 , etc etc. I remember also beating Power Drift, or reaching some kind of special stage or something.

Playing Cadillacs & Dinosaurs with some other people, I managed to do it using a single continue once, in a real arcade.

Now with Mame, I have a few under my belt, some that I am really proud. Metal Slug 1, Gigawing, Armed Police Batrider and Thunder Dragon 2 are probably the hardest ones I managed to do it.

I've played both with friends on Mame for fun and laughs, they felt incredibly cheat and bloody impossible to be beaten with just 1 credit. Of course, I've long learned there's nothing close to "impossible" on the gaming world, since I've seen some incredible feats myself.

I don't know how "close" you were, but no matter how, it's impressive. Both games are ridiculous difficulty.

Arcade :

Street Fighter 2 (but only with Blanka )
Out Run (every time I played )

NeoGeo AES :

Magican Lord, although the "cats" level is pretty difficult even on normal mode ....

Nemesis/Gradius - although unless you died on the 1st/2nd levels you basically had to finish it on one life - once you lost your powerups on level 3+ the game was over.

I've beaten Salamander/Life Force on a single credit too but that was only because I used to own the arcade machine

Very true; they are both very difficult. When I say that I completed the games it was more like 3 - 4 credits and playing doubles

I used to play arcades with my twin brother in Sydney from the age of 8 up to 19 years old; before I went on a European holiday at the age of 21 and have been living in London ever since (sponsored / residency / citizenship) . There was a local video store that had 3 arcade machines and these would be swapped to new ones every month. My dad would get a movie virtually every night and leave us with $2 AUD to bash away.

There was also a local pool / snooker bar that had 25+ arcade machines, not to mention a bowling alley that had 50+ arcade machines

There were a lot of games that suffered from this; for example:

... Slap Fight
... Twin Cobra

Pretty much every Capcom and SNK fighter of the 1991-2004 era, 2d-3d-spin offs and what-not, mostly with all available characters, Midnight Resistance, Superstars of Wrestling, Wrestlefest and Robocop. Maybe Tumble Pop as well, but I may have used a second credit towards the end, not sure.

Every level and every check point on the first Gradius is recoverable, at least on the 1st loop. It's on some of the later games and, mostly, in Parodius, where the "1-life syndrome" kicks in. People seems to forget that the game has a furious rank system, that makes the game a lot harder when you are all fully powered-up and your life lasts for too long. The first time I've beaten the game, I lost a couple of lives on the last stage and still managed to beat it. I am pretty sure I've finished the 1st loop of it dying on other parts of it.... I've 1 life-cleared it, but it took me a few normal 1 credit clears to do it.

Slap Fight that was mentioned, in the other hand.... extra lifes on that game serves no purpose at all.

I did loop Slap Fight once, and got very close to loop it twice a few times.

My most recent arcade 1CC was Cotton . Very, very nice game. And according to Twin Galaxies (hahaha), if I had cared to record my play of it, I'd have the world record for it, since my score was nearly double the best score recorded there. Hahaha.
