The Chaos Engine, modified

[ Show youtube player ]

The result of a lot of hard work (by Kroah and others I think as well). Also a lot of hair-pulling. I have to finish a few features and polish things a bit, then an editor is all done. Enjoy the video for now.

Awesome! I wonder what liberty we have since some stuff is hardcoded in the exe.

Good luck for recreating the whole bunch of new levels. Takes a lot of time!
I haven't finished Gods 4 levels yet

A lot, actually. Most of the enemy behaviour is hardcoded obviously, but aside from that entire levels can be modified as you please. I assume there are memory constraints at some point, but with the complexity of some of the original levels those constraints will be comfortably high.

Great job!

I had almost forgotten about CE and how great graphics it has. I was looking at Gods the other day and found that it only used 14 colors for the levels and all animated graphics. CE looks so good you'd think it was using 32, but it only uses 16. Serious pixeling skills!

@Leffman: the vid shows the AGA version, more colorful. But that was a common belief to think that Bitmap Bros used 32 colors (I used to think that myself).
They used only 16 colors for each of their games maybe to be compatible with the ST (or the ST versions would have looked bad), except for the AGA revamps (SB2, CE 1 & 2)
Yes, Dan Malone and Mark Coleman are really impressive.

@Exl/Kroah: you f**kin' rule!!! there's no need to write a remake of CE now that there's a level editor.
BTW Kroah has also written a Cadaver level viewer which rocks!!!!

i no fan of CE (just cant get into it) , but who cares? Level editors are cool, and a great way to breathe new life into the old classics.

top notch stuff, well done!

The version seen in the video is the AGA one, as JotD mentions. It uses 256 colors, subdivided into 16 palettes of 16 colors each. THe tiles use one of those palettes, an individual sprite can use one of those 16 palettes, same for the statusbar. After spending ages looking over the tile graphics I can say they are damn impressively done, with only 16 colors.

What, no need for networked multiplayer, more intelligent CPU player(s) or some more grand-scale ideas like one giant world in which all levels are running simultaneously? (I can dream...)

Alright, I've calmed down a bit now

This is just the best thing that could have happened to CE. It's my #1 Amiga game and I've played it to death over the years. Really looking forward to going through some brand new maps in this classic game.

This and the work that Jotd does is just fantastic and I'm really glad it's BB games getting all the love.

Brilliant work to all involved! You will be remembered
