> On the other hand, many people are intrigued by your PFS4. Do you have at least a draft of what was supposed to feature? It will be interesting to have any information regarding this filesystem.

PFS3 was a very modern and advanced filesystem for its time, not only
looking at the Amiga market, but at filesystems in general. Over the
years many of the ideas found in PFS3 have been incorporated in other
filesystems. PFS3 was one of the first to be atomic, now more have
this feature. Rollover files still seem to be unique to PFS3.

PFS3 was based on the original shareware PFS which was designed as a
floppy filesystem. A lot of changes have been made to make PFS work on
ever larger harddisks and the result was PFS3 which works pretty well.
The most recent Linux filesystems like Reiser4 surpass it though, but
there is one area where PFS3 remains king: the floppy or other
relatively small removable disks like ZIP, what it was originally
designed to work on.

PFS4 is a new design from the ground up. It takes the good things from
PFS3 and adds new ideas inspired by scientific papers and open source
filesystems like Reiser. Most notable improvements compared to PFS3
are
- B+ tree for directory structure which improves scalability and
handling of large directories.
- Redesign of the atomic commit feature.
- Automatic grouping of small files which results in both more
storagespace and better performance.
- Builtin automatic defragmentation and improved fragmentation prevention.

Note that PFS4 only exists on paper.

Best regards,

Michiel Pelt

Are we any closer to a PFS3 binary release (with key if necessary) via Aminet?

Source code is nice 'n' all but most of us just want to try this with our 68000 based A600's

..."First thing is the binary release on aminet. You can expect that soon
enough."... By Michiel Pelt on the 4th May 2010

How soon is "soon enough", I dont know

'Two more weeks...'

Yes, naugthy but I couldn't resist.

On a more sensible note:
If Michiel Pelt is happy to release PFS3 in any form at any time, however long it takes to do so, that's really generous of him and I appreciate his kindness.

no, maybe you can access it through an "Amiga" within UAE, atleast I could read my (PSF3) HDDs under WinUAE that way. if its opensourced that could change.

And regarding license again, zlib fits closely, just edit the first statement to read "required" instead of "appreciated".

Just to keep you all updated. AndreasM, the guy in charge of the Amiga Future magazine, asked me for the email of Michiel Pelt, which I gladly gave him.

What follows is a brief email update from Michiel:

Ignacio,

The full PFS3 will be available on the Amiga Future cover disk as is.
This will consist of the files directly taken from the original CD.

Best regards

THB signature seems somehow relevant??

Surely?? it will be freely distrubutable once people get it off the coverdisks? (coverdisk... isnt that one of those things you have to extract out to 3 floppies usings DMS that was all the rage back ion the 90's)

Well I thought the author wanted the CD structure preserved (The CD you can buy, of PFS3).

In any event, the emails to Gulliver said he "Intends to release the binary to Aminet first", Then Gulliver says "AndreasM emailed me for the Author's Email address, So I gave it", and lastly "The Author emailed me back, its going to appear on AF coverdisk"

Gulliver you PLONKER !!!!!!!!!!!, You could have waited till Pelt released the binary to Aminet, now we have to wait for someone to BUY the magazine and sneak it out to the rest of us. (Unless it is a SIMULTANEOUS Aminet/AF release), I wonder if PELT even knows that AF is a COMMERCIAL enterprise, Also makes you wonder if AndreasM falsely told him it was a FREE magazine to get the OK (Going by his history). Infact, its AU$20 an issue, or (Around AU$100 for a year sub for me)
