Hello and help identifying my expansion board!

Hi,

I had an Amiga 1200 from about 1993 - 1997, and only lost interest in it when the internet came about. But I'm pleased to say that I've just bought another A1200 and am looking forward to playing all the games I used to love again!

The A1200 I've just bought has a trapdoor expansion card, but I have no idea what it is. Can anybody identify it from this photo?

Through Workbench I can see that I have 8mb of FastRam, if anyone can identify the card does anyone know what the maximum memory it can take is?

Any help appreciated

thats clearly an 8mb card for the A1200 - infact its an 1208MA

features
  • one 72 pin SIMM socket accepts 8 MB RAM
  • supports 1, 2, 4, 8 MB SIMMs
  • with 8 MB RAM installed, the memory address space can be set either continuous or PCMCIA compatible
  • optional PLCC or PGA FPU, 68881 @ 14 MHz - 68882 @ 50 MHz
  • battery backed up clock
  • disable jumper

hope that helps.

btw ..... welcome to EAB =)

Yep that looks like the one, thanks! So is it just a memory expansion/battery or does it have a processor upgrade too?

I'm not planning on selling it, but any idea how rare a a board like this might be? I've seen expansion boards for sale for 100+ so would just be useful to know.

it only has a FPU upgrade. No real gain on classic apps. The important stuff is 8MB extra mem => welcome to WHDLoad games.

100 would be a ripoff for such a board. For 100 you can have a 68030 expansion board right?

The 100 type of price is for an accelerator card, the type you have generally go for between 20 to 40 depending on who is bidding, I got my card for 35 and there were a lot of bidders.

OK cool thanks, was just wandering if it was a high end card but I guess not. Still seems to do a good job though!

FYI, yours doesn't have an FPU installed either (ie, empty sockets) you can install a PLCC or PGA package FPU in one of the slots, but it's really not necessary (unless you're planning to do 3d rendering stuff or spreadsheets etc ...)

Hi there edd_jedi,

realistically you would probably be better off using the card yourself. You can easily download Whdload games that work from a hard drive or Compact Flash drive, most of the games require extra memory to run and that is what you have and the 1200 is a brilliant machine especially with that extra memory.
